4173: Fool - Hermione Granger

Again, why does FB have its own category? Does it really make the stories easier to find? I think the answer is - no, it does not.

Specifically, I found this particular story because I was trying to find out which story had the most reviews, in or out of the category. This one has just over 15k in words, only five chapters, but 356 reviews. The ( Read more... )

I don't really see the point of AUs where the characters don't resemble the characters they are based on. Like why exactly does it have to be Hermione? If the Suethor must have a character with a time turner, they could have simply invented an OC who got one from a shady fortune teller, an heirloom inheritance, or some other dubious reason. They could then invent OCs that act like these OOC canon characters and the story would have probably progressed the same way.

Writers of such AUs defend it as artistic license, yet I fail to see what's artistic about butchering another persons work. Now, there are people who explore alternative characterization for their fanfics, and that is the point, to see how things would change, but this isn't that, yet I still consider that IC.

I actually find this fascinating-Usually it's Harry that's the SUPERPOWERED GOD MODE SUE and Hermione that's the "ship with author's lust object" Sue. It's interesting to see that.
And why not just Sueify Harry and Ron instead of making up new, bland Sue characters?

And only now do I realize this is also a Newt/Hermione fic..

Ugggggggh

So it's both Godmod and contrived romance.

Remember when Inheritance! Harry and Dark Lord! Harry fics were super en vogue? Or are they still? Just like godmode! Hermione, these always come from people who fundamentally misundertand the central themes of Harry Potter.

I believe they're still in vogue. How can they understand the central themes when they don't seem to understand how people do and don't act in real life?

Want to know something that bugs the hell out of me? That terrible suefics such as this get that many reviews, and honest-to-Jove awesome ones languish unnoticed and unloved.

I'm not even talking about my own stuff - I always get some reviews and PMs and whatnot; especially my Twilight spitefic is moderately popular - but I've seen some amazing stories that get almost no views and no comments.

Then I think about all the shitty novels that get published and that sell like hotcakes...and that depresses me. Apparently, a good chunk of people really are that stupid.

Also, in regard to this fic, I really hate OOC Hermione and Weasley bashing (and suethor: the plural of Weasley is Weasleys. No apostrophe, please). If you're going to change everyone's personality, then write your own damn OCs. AU is not an excuse for bullshit.

Do you know what's worse? The fact when you talk about how the good stories don't get many reviews, but the bad ones get a ton and no negative ones goes over the writers head typically. I know, because I was in one of these forums, and I found myself calling one of the kids I reviewed out for coming in saying they knew what everyone was talking about, only to point out in that same thread that they didn't appreciate the fact I'd left a negative review on their story ( ... )

As an AU writer, I dislike the fact writers attempt to justify the problems by saying their story is AU, as they don't get the genre at all.
