Are you still thinking about maybe making the trek to London sometimes? I'd say practice outdoors - it's what GGRD did for an entire season - but then I remember it is much rainier there.
I don't even know if there's a possible outdoor space in Oxford, seriously. They practice outside in London sometimes. They're not intaking newbies right now anyways. And I learn to need how to skate. Harrumph.
Well, get skates and start practicing! Basic cheap skates are fine, but low speed boots not high figure skating ones that go up around the ankle. You'll find your balance better with speed ones. Wrist guards and knee pads for sure - Triple 8 or a basic brand are fine to start.
Elbow pads, helmet, and mouthguard are necessary for derby, but not really for just skating around.
I suppose I've been pretty out of touch with LJ not to realize that you moved over to this identity, like, 3 months ago? No wonder it's seemed quiet. :-)
I'm legally and morally obligated to respond that there is *plenty* to do in Rochester. And if you throw in the entirety of the Finger Lakes region down to and including Ithaca, well, you could practically grow up there.

The House of Guitars
The Public Market
The Susan B. Anthony House
The National Museum of Play (formerly the Strong Museum, which I liked better)
The International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House
Highland Park! Especially if it's Festival weekend and/or the lilacs are in bloom.
High Falls (yes, it's depressing, but there it is in that big pit down there across from the brewery!)
Eastman Theater/Kilbourn Hall/Eastman School of Music-ness
Seabreeze (the neighborhood *and* the creepy old amusement park)
Any pretty Erie Canal place - say, Pittsford, or Fairport, and/or one of the
