It's my headcanon that Chester used to be a lot nicer before the entire Toltus village massacre. You know, back when his sister was alive and kickin' and lusting all over Cless. It's my belief that his mannerisms got a little rougher and rasher with the entire Mars incident, but not to the point where it's completely noticeable in one go. This is because I don't believe anyone, especially someone as emotional as Chester, can get through such a trauma without any emotional repercussion.
He also doesn't really think before he speaks, so my guess is that often times, he offends a lot of people. But he never really means it. He just really likes to tease. A lot. And if he teases you more and more and more, the more he likes you, as a person. It's just the way he expresses himself.
Shikamaru, all in all, is the type that will not hide things from someone unless it's something that concerns his own self. Meaning, he won't beat around the bush and even if he comes off as a douchebag, he'll be honest. And half the time he brushes people off, it's because he really doesn't care; instead of nodding along and pretending to be interested, he'll just. Be straight up honest about it.
Not that he's a wholly honest person, but at least in that aspect, he is. Even sarcastically.
In the end, as with Chester (;;;), Shikamaru's actions speak more than his words. He does a lot of thankless shit for Ino and probably even Sakura, and doesn't really expect anything out of it. He's a nice guy! To a certain point. He just doesn't show it much because he doesn't see the point in flaunting it around like a medal. Only problem is, he won't take bullshit like most nice guys would. 8(
Briefs. Because he wears spandex, okay, and boxers would look awkward underneath all the stretchy. It leaves pantie lines, and no self-respecting hero shows up at the big bad's floating fortress with pantie lines swirling around his crotch and up his asscrack. Furthermore, Cless likes having a little support for his junk, rather than just hanging out and free, like with boxers. As a swordsman, he does a lot of physical activity, including running, jumping, bobbing, and thrusting, which can all get very uncomfortable without proper support. However, he has considered switching to boxer-briefs, to get the best of both worlds, so to speak, but he's ultimately a creature of habit. He's content with his choice in underwear.
<--see icon I think when he actually takes time to go to sleep and not just falls asleep in the clothing he wore all day (the Academy Uniform...which he's been hunting in lately too) he actually at least wears pajama pants...if not always the shirt.
Normally he just crashes on his bed fully clothed, Ichiru's coat and all.
I know you said you think his wings at the end of Symphonia were just a temporary boost, but his Exsphere did evolve into SOMETHING. Did it do anything special for him (like how the Cruxis Crystals give people enhanced sight, hearing, etc.)?
Yeah, it did have to evolve into something-- the wings were just temporary.
I'd like to assume that he got some extra strength and stuff from it, but everyone in ToS ends up NOT LEVEL 80 in the sequel. But I like to assume that he got even more strength than his Exsphere already supplied. So. I guess those things got even more enhanced than they usually are.
Curse you ToS2 for not letting the original cast be massively overleveled. But that is gameplay. Lloyd pretty clearly wiped the floor with just about everyone in cutscenes, unless they had Cores.
