IVs, are they genetic?

I'm confused as to how IVs are generated. Are they completely random values, does it average the IVs of the pokemon you breed, does either parent's IVs have any effect on what the offspring's is? What?

IVs from wild Pokémon are completely random.

When you breed, one IV is randomly picked from each parent and given to the baby. They cannot be the same stat. For example, the mother may pass on its ATK IV and the father its SPD IV. Then one of the parents is randomly chosen and another of its IVs randomly given to the baby; again, it can't clash with a previously given IV. The rest are random. In short: 2 from one parent, 1 from the other, 3 randoms.

(This is only Emerald/Diamond/Pearl btw.)

Super! That's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks a lot. :D

From here"The IVs for the baby are first created at random. Then, a random IV from either parent is inherited to the baby. Then, any random IV except an HP IV is selected from either parent and is passed to the baby. Finally, any random IV except an HP or Defense IV is selected from either parent and passed to the baby. These three random IVs may overlap, that is, the same random IV can be chosen to be inherited in the second, or third, IV transfer ( ... )

Oh wow, thanks. This explains a lot.

I wonder why the Def. stat has a lower chance of being inherited.

That's an excellent guide, and explains a few things about my recent experiences in breeding on Diamond.

It was quite confusing, though, how they mentioned that three IVs are inherited from the parents and then they give probabilities of 6 IVs being inherited. Took me a while to realize, that's the probability of 6 IVs SEEMING to be inherited, where 3 were actually inherited and the others were random and just happened to match the parents' stats. That's a major flaw in their semantics.

Yeah, I know. But I love the guide, so I don't complain. Better that they do the math and leave me to gripe about the English... *hates math*
