THINGS THAT ARE WRONG WITH THE MARCH TO RESTORE SANITY:

Disableism.  It is absolutely unacceptable to use a word loaded with ableist connotations - in this case "sanity" as a measure of anything other than actual mental health issues - and then dub yourself the arbiter of what is civil discourse in America.  "Crazy" is not a synonymous with "someone ( Read more... )

This is a really interesting post. I suffer from a mental illness myself (OCD) and yet I hadn't really thought about this particular narrative. I think I tend to write off a lot of what the Daily Show presents because it's comedy, you know? And I think comedy can be off-color when it needs to be. But there is something sort of needless about the sanity component to this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, because I honestly hadn't considered it.

It'd be one thing if it was just television - honestly if I was going to deal with offensive comedy I would just have to watch Carlos Mencia forever and that would be a miserable disaster - but this is deliberate political activism, not political humor, you know? I can deal and I usually don't think too much about it when it's just comedy, though obviously I don't get upset or defensive when people take issue. But this is taking that entertainment capital and moving it into the political arena with a rally, so he really can't weasel out of it with "it's just a joke" any more. Making a political statement with an actual March On Washington is an action that openly calls for political critical thinking IMO ( ... )

I completely agree with you. I really resent Stewart's claim to be the "voice of reason" here, not realizing that the voices he's implicitly discounting are precisely those discounted by the radical right -- the feminine, people with disabilities, the racially other. Seriously.

This shit is so annoying, right? I used to really like TDS but I think this has ruined it for me completely, I haven't watched since this mess was announced.

Bush...IS a war criminal!

CLEARLY YOU ARE DESTROYING AMERICA TOO; I FEEL LESS ALONE.

In seriousness...just because something people say something with very serious implications, doesn't mean it's not true! Why do liberals somehow accept that the law of war and international law are not real things? THERE ARE ACTUAL RULES TO THIS SHIT. We don't say "first-degree murder! heeeeeeeeey! whoa!!!! super-harsh!" about someone who's accused of premeditated murder. We take it seriously, optimally, but we're not like THAT IS A VERY SERIOUS ACCUSATION SO WE SHOULD NEVER MAKE IT. There's a perfectly legit, coherent argument to the statement "Bush is a war criminal" and it is relevant to political discourse. Neither of those things are true with "Obama is a secret Muslim." CRITICAL THINKING. PLEASE. I PINE FOR LOGIC. PINE.

he thought pro-choice advocates were JUST AS BAD as the anti-choicers.

Heh. Was it Lord Saletan of Slateshire, by any chance?

Yeah, no argument here. Solid post.

The claim that Bush is "a war criminal" has ample basis, and it's deeply irresponsible to try to declare this discussion off-limits, or lump it in with a whole slew of baseless right-wing accusatory rhetoric, in order to establish one's centrist bona fides.

I have nothing further to add.

Except, Jon Stewart, check your privilege.

Thank-you for sharing this post. It's easy to miss things from Australia (especially since I don't really follow The Daily Show etc), but this was big enough to make the papers here so it's good to get a critical perspective on it from someone whoactually thinks about this stuff.

In fairness there have actually been a lot of solid criticisms, I tried to link to some of the better ones I found, but you know, WE ARE ALL DIRTY HIPPIES and cannot possibly be Serious People so it doesn't get a whole lot of attention. Boo.
