You check YOUR fucking privilege! Body image is not trivial!

Apr 07, 2010 17:29

I’m kind of seeing a trend in a lot of the third-wave-y blogs* I frequent in which the authors (a) decry the widespread discussion of body image issues within mainstream feminism because Other Issues are more important, (b) sanctimoniously claim that they’re not going to talk about body image because it is an issue for privileged white girls and no ( Read more... )

wtf, disability, feminism, depression, rant, body image, race, body positivity

I KNOW. I had trouble believing it my own self. Like, okay. If someone in good faith wants to raise the issue that body image/ED issues are mostly focused on white, thin girls, I am okay with that; I am in fact on record as having said that numerous fucking times. But this is a reaction to some snide-ass leftier-than-thou drive-by mean-spiritedness.

People also...don't seem to quite be able to connect body image and fat-shaming. Which makes me wish there were a charity handing out Logic 101 books.

I'm really crossing my fingers for you with that ED job; I can't imagine someone would be better at it. Ugh, I'll never forget the time I disclosed my ED history to a therapist and he spent the entire rest of the session harping on what a GROTESQUE FATTIE I am! Which, really, would always be inappropriate, but I wear straight sizes. I can't image the damage that could do to a woman who's even less conforming to the All-Important Beauty Standard.

I guess all of those people DYING are just a distraction from those Important Feminist Issues

DON'T YOU KNOW??! If they thought of it way the fuck back in the Second Wave, it must be racist and useless! GOD.

I have been given the same kind of food-shaming/body-shaming mental warfare that pro-Ana sites suggest by Doctors telling me that thin is healthy

That is so common and so fucking scary. Ugh. RAGE.

I don't mean to trivialize other ethical infractions, but GOD I wish the licensing board would spend half of the time they spend on sexual allegations on stuff like that. How on EARTH can these people be allowed to practice?

Douchebag was recommended to me by the therapist/referencer at school too. You know I called them the next day and was like NEVER SEND ANYONE TO THIS A-HOLE AGAIN.
