Charles' entire face is red when he collapses next to Erik on the wrought iron bench. It's the only bench currently in the shade and Erik had no compunctions about glaring the previous occupant into submission until they scurried away.

"It's too bloody hot," Charles says.

"Don't look at me," Erik says. "Your cousin is the one who decided to get married on the beach in eighty-five degree weather."

"In his defense, I don't think anyone would have predicted eighty-five degree weather for mid-May in Massachusetts," Charles says. He tugs inefficiently at his collar.

"You also probably wouldn't be as hot if you didn't insist on running around after a bunch of children," Erik points out. Predictably, Charles waves him away.

"They were bored," he says.

"That's their parents' problem, not yours," Erik says. He hands Charles his bottle of water, now lukewarm. "I only point it out because it will be inconvenient if you pass out from heatstroke." He pauses to consider that. "Actually, I take that back. Hospitals are air-conditioned. Why don't you go chase the brats around a little more?"

Charles swats at him and wraps around Erik's awareness like an embrace. It's the closest Erik's going to allow him to come to an actual embrace until either it miraculously cools down or they finally open the club for the reception.

"What's taking them so long to open up?" Erik asks, glancing up at the club again. "We're going to pass out before the reception starts."

"Megan's mother is very...exact," Charles says.

"I assume there's not a person here who will turn their nose up at awkward placesettings if it means they can get out of this heat," Erik says.

"You don't spend enough time around the uppercrust," Charles mutters, and before he can expound upon that, a harried looking woman with a toddler wrapped around her leg and a crying baby in her arms limps by.

"Oh, Charlie!" she says.

Erik mouths, 'Charlie?' to Charles skeptically, but Charles is already on his feet, smiling blandly at the woman.

"Theresa," he says. "Good to see you! I saw Brian earlier and Andrew and Devon of course." He waves at the little boy hugging the woman's leg and he shyly waves back.

"Brian told me you were here," she says. "Nice to see you again, kid. And with your pants on and everything."

Charles, if possible, goes redder.

I want to hear this story, Erik thinks immediately, and Charles sends him the mental equivalent of a kick under the table.

"It's lovely to see you too," Charles says. "How are you?"

"I'd be better if I could lose the kids long enough to put Devon's formula back inside," she says.

Erik sees an opportunity and jumps at it.

"We can take that in for you, if you want," he says. "It wouldn't be any trouble."

"Theresa, this is my boyfriend, Erik," Charles says. What are you doing? he asks Erik. "Erik, this is Theresa. She's Megan's sister-in-law. The baby is Devon and this big kid down here is Andrew."

Andrew preens at being labelled a big kid. Theresa looks over Erik with raised eyebrows.

"Good job, Charlie," she says. "I'd say he's an upgrade, even if the other kid was worth a ton. But I don't want to bother you. It's a long walk up and back."

I don't plan on going back, Erik thinks to Charles. Aloud he says, "It would be no trouble, honestly. It looks like you've got your hands full."

"Well, aren't you sweet?" she says. She twitches her shoulder and slides her diaper bag down, catching it in her free hand. "Thanks! They had me keeping it in the kitchen off the dining room, not the kitchen off the ballroom, where the caterers are set up. You can't miss it--the ballroom kitchen is crazy. This one is empty."

"I'm sure we'll be able to find it," Charles says. "We'll have to catch up later, Theresa."

"Sure thing, Charlie," she says, and Erik takes Charles' hand and starts to drag him up towards the club.

"You're a terrible human being," Charles says once they're out of earshot. "And when we get back to the hotel, I'm going to fuck you on every horizontal surface."

Erik grins. "See?" he says. "I keep telling you, selfishness is always rewarded."
