Jack had had trouble sleeping. He didn't want to wake Ianto, so he left his room, considering going next door to Ianto's, but decided to go for a walk instead. He didn't know what floor he was on. He'd been wandering randomly, sometimes taking a flight of stairs and not really paying attention. Lost in thought.
He heard a door open and close up ahead, but only spared the hallway ahead of him a cursory glance.
Janeway turned from checking the lock in her door and all but ran right into a solid body in the process. She lurched back, drawing her phaser and pointing it at the stranger...mind frantically trying to process who on Earth would be up this late at night besides herself--
When she recognized a moment later the tall form of Captain Jack Harkness.
Janeway froze, phaser wielding hand wavering slightly. "Captain Harkness," She said in surprise. She blew out a breath and dropped the weapon to her side. "I'm...I'm sorry. You startled me." Janeway scrambled to reign in her panic.
Jack had, through sheer instinct, put his hands up the moment the phaser was pointed at him.
"So I noticed," he replied, slowly lowering them as she lowered the weapon. "Where are you going in such a hurry?" he asked, putting his hands on his hips. "With one of those," he added with a nod to the phaser in her hand.
Janeway took a deep breath. "It's disabled to stun...worse it was going to do was knock you out." She said. The phaser was set to heavy stun in fact, and in that moment of panic and the range at which they had been at...even the stun setting could have killed Jack. But that was a mute point. She had nearly opened up fire on another tenant.
She toyed with the possibility of lying, but it was ridiculously late...or early depending on who you asked, to be making up lies. The admiral sighed a little and brought her hand to her forehead. "I was going down the hall to...Doctor Bashir's room. It seems the sleep aids wore off sooner than expected."
Janeway pulled her house coat a little tighter around herself, feeling a bit foolish now that she was standing in the hall in her bare feet and nightgown.
"Cardassians are never disarmed," Jack said. "They're like how Klingons would be if they were sneaky instead of mean," he teased, trying to lighten her mood just a bit.
"I keep asking myself if I should have just shot him." Janeway said with a roll of her shoulders. "But it would have put him out of his misery...and after everything that happened that night, I would have been more that justified." She huffed out a breath and stood up, starting to walk around her room. Something to release the pent up energy her anger was feeding.
"Klingons have honor." Janeway countered coolly. Though it was nice of the captain to try and make merry. She wasn't exactly in the right frame of mind to partake of it. "A Klingon would sooner cut his own throat before sinking to the depths of dishonorable conduct Dukat did."
She stopped pacing and worked her jaw as she stared out the windows to the desert. Her mind flashed back to those first moments of consciousness following being kidnapped. "A Klingon wouldn't have tied me to a bed." It came out low, angry, and just under her own breath.
"Actually," Jack countered, "in my experience, you can talk them into it."
He got up and went to the fridge. He found two beers inside. He pulled them out and handed one to the Admiral.
"Anyway, if you killed him in cold blood, what would that make you? I joke about the Federation's self-righteousness as much as the next person, but you really are the moral centre of your time and you can't go around just murdering people."
She didn't take any comfort in that, turning to look at Jack with a expression that hedged very close to muted fury. The admiral didn't accept the beverage that was offered to her, but met the captain's gaze as he brought up Federation morals. Her blue eyes harden.
"Would shooting him have been cold blood, Captain, if he threatened to rape you?" She demanded. "Or justifiable self defense?"
Janeway tried not to look concerned. There had to be a reason why Julian was not answer his door. Something in the back of her mind nagged at her that she was suppose to know this...the sleep aid though was probably the reason why she wasn't recalling quite so well.
"Do we need to go to such drastic measures?" She asked.
Jack gave an easy shrug. "Up to you," he said. "But the hotel always fixes it up afterwards, so it's not like he'd be left without a door." He chuckled. "Well, unless the hotel felt mischievious."
"Not well," Jack confessed. "We still don't have enough players." He looked at Janeway over the rim of his mug. "Of course, you could be part of that solution, instead of part of the problem," he reminded her with a smile.
"He sure did," Jack replied. "That's the can-do Starfleet spirit I expected to see set forth by the senior officers as well!" he added with a pointed look.
"I intend to be there to watch." Janeway commented. "And while I have no problem attending Betazoid weddings as skyclad as the next obligated guest...a voluntary sporting event for the amusement of just doing it falls under personal choice." She smiled a bit wickedly. "Best to let the younger and better looking fill your ranks anyway."
Janeway scoffed with a slight laugh. "You are terribly persistent, Captain." She said and set down the nearly empty mug. She relaxed back a bit more to take advantage of the cushioned arm rest and the pillow sitting out on the sofa. "Yes, I play...played tennis. Julian is quite fond of racquetball...if you'd rather see that sport in the nude."
