I'm doing NaNo this year and writing a YGO AU fic where Zane, Atticus and Chazz from YGO GX are main characters along with Kaiba, Marik and Bakura from YGO DM. And they are all in high school together. Well here is I need help with. I need some bios on Zane, Atticus and Chazz that are not from the YGO Wiki site or Wikipedia. I tried other anime

There are several issues I see with this. First, judging by the name usage, I assume that you're going with the dub version, not the Japanese one. I say this because there have been significant alterations to the mannerisms, motivations and even personalities of some characters between the 4KIDS dub and the original version -- so anything I were to say about Manjoume, for example, wouldn't apply all that well to Chazz (both since I've stopped watching the dub a long time ago and since Chazz himself is a very caricaturized, fourth wall-breaking version of Manjoume, for example).

Secondly, if you're going to go with a high-school AU, I presume that you want to have them all either in the same class or at least of similar ages to each other.... something that doesn't exactly work, since there are around ten years between DM and GX. Arynis has kindly provided a basic time-line here for the events of early DM, which points out the fact that the anime took place from around 1992 to at most 1994 (with some liberal use of time-stretching).

Admittedly, that's just about my own view in regards to them as well, but to each his own. As long as they're not mangling canon in an absolutely horrible manner, I'll leave everyone to write whatever they like. The fandom is far more peaceful that way and my nerves are more settled as well. :p

I'm that way to. But seeing the label of high school AU is like seeing someone in the middle of a busy street that can't hear you. You want to help, but you just can't stop watching it.

Why are you writing fic of them if you aren't that aware of their bios? I don't understand how you can want to write fic of them without knowing their basic characters.

I mean, for me, I write fic for stuff (at least in my head) after I see them in action. I'm disinclined to writing fic featuring Aki from 5ds because I don't know that much about her or her personality, but I love writing about Kaiba because I do know him.

Don't you think you should try to get their characters down pat first before trying to work them in a plot? I can't see how a plot can be useful if you don't have an understanding of how the characters would react, thus advancing the plot.

But maybe I'm just misunderstanding? :/

Well I just got back into the GX fandom a couple months back and everything is a tad rusty in the brain box. I'm aware of their bios but I just wanted other points of view on them to make sure. That is why I'm writing a few little drabbles first before doing the major plotting and I have a few good friends an Twitter to help me out too.

Maybe I'm being a little picky here, but can fanfiction even be considered a novel? If I were you, if I really wanted to write a story I would abandon YGO completely--invent your own characters, settings, and situations. At least that way you won't have to worry about conforming to the vision of another author, and it will free you up to be more truly creative. But, eh, whatever.
