my journal, I'm crossposting this here so more people can see it.
Based on the information I found, I wanted to write a timeline for DM. However, it gets ambiguous at several points (eg. between arcs), so I simplified my project by writing a Pegasus centric timeline instead. Based on the manga (Japanese anime for the God card creation bit) and took R into account as well.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Timeline - Pegasus centric
Determining the year the series takes place in:
It is heavily implied that the series starts in 1996, and majority of it takes place during 1997.
Pegasus is 24 years old during Duelist Kingdom, according to the Gospel of Truth.
Dates written in Italics are based on speculations or are estimated. I included explanations about some of the italicized dates below the timeline.
Special thanks to the people who helped me with getting this together! ♥
[1972]
Cyndia is born.
[1972 October 8]
Pegasus is born.
[1982]
At the age of 10, Pegasus and Cyndia meet at a social function.
[1989 autumn]
Cyndia dies of an unknown illness at the age of 17, shortly after Pegasus’ 17th birthday.
[1990]
Pegasus visits Egypt after getting interested in the concept of Egyptian afterlife. He meets Shadi in Kul Elna and gains the Millennium Eye. Discovers the tablets with the “monsters” housed in them. Starts his own company, Industrial Illusions, and starts working on the Duel Monsters card game.
[1992]
Earliest date at which Pegasus could’ve created the God cards.
[1992-1997]
Pegasus adopts several orphans, the Tenma twins among them, to raise them as duelists and game designers, and so on.
[~1996 autumn/early winter]
[About 6 months before Duelist Kingdom, after Dark Yugi deals his first Penalty Game on Kaiba but before Death-T]
Pegasus beats and humiliates “Bandit” Keith Howard in the King of Duelists duel at the National Duel Stadium of America, New York. Kaiba and Pegasus discuss, and later on, develop the Duel Box, the precursor of the Solid Vision system.
[About 6 months before Duelist Kingdom, after Death-T]
Kaiba receives his second Penalty Game from Dark Yugi and goes into a coma. Kaiba Corp’s popularity goes down. Pegasus and the Big Five make an agreement about handing the company over to Pegasus if he can defeat Yugi.
[1997 spring, but before April, the start of a new school year]
[About a week before Duelist Kingdom]
Pegasus starts making the preparations for Duelist Kingdom, inviting several duelists to take part in his tournament. He makes an appearance to hand over the tournament trophy to Insector Haga, inviting him as well. During the same evening, Pegasus duels Yugi through a video recording and takes Sugoroku as a hostage in order to lure Yugi to Duelist Kingdom.
[The day before Duelist Kingdom]
Pegasus and Tenma Yakou talk to each other at Pegasus’ mansion. He explains his plans to his adopted son.
[Duelist Kingdom]
[Day 1]
Pegasus welcomes everyone at Duelist Kingdom and explains the rules. Later that day, he is seen reading his Funny Rabbit comic. He’s informed of Mokuba’s presence on the island. At late night (between 10-11 PM) he’s informed of Kaiba heading to Duelist Kingdom.
[Day 2]
Around in the afternoon, Pegasus and Kaiba make a deal: If Kaiba can beat Yugi and him, he can get Mokuba back. During Yugi’s and Kaiba’s duel, Pegasus takes Mokuba’s soul. Pegasus manipulates Kaiba by making him duel with the soulless Mokuba, after which he agrees not to duel with the Duel Disk prototypes. Pegasus and Kaiba then duel, resulting in Kaiba’s loss. Pegasus takes Kaiba’s soul.
[Day 3]
The Duelist Kingdom semifinals take place, with Yugi as the victor. Pegasus and Yugi duel. With Yugi and Dark Yugi working together, Pegasus loses, resulting in the contract between him and the Big 5 going invalid. He explains his story about Cyndia and the Millennium Eye to Yugi. Then the group reunites with Mokuba, who then reunite with Kaiba, this happening in the late afternoon. Bakura stays behind, takes Pegasus’ Millennium Eye and presumably murders him at the same time.
Explanations
[Cyndia’s year of birth]
Pegasus stated that Cyndia died at the age of 17, shortly after his 17th birthday. Going by this, we could assume that Cyndia is slightly older than Pegasus.
[Cyndia’s death]
She died shortly after Pegasus’ birthday, which is in October. Judging by her funeral scene, it wasn’t winter at the time either.
[Pegasus going to Egypt in 1990]
Pegasus stated that “for months he stared at the white canvas of his heart”. Again, his birthday is in October, so after a few months of grieving a new year has surely begun.
[The date of the God cards’ creation]
This one is trickier. Ishizu said that the tragedy of the Ishtars occurred five years before Battle City. If we go by the anime, Pegasus met Ishizu when he intended to seal the God cards in Egypt, at which time she already had the Necklace. Before the tragedy the Necklace was kept in the temple along with the Rod. Therefore Pegasus could’ve created the God cards five years ago. When he found the Gods’ tablet, he also claimed his game would be finally complete. Therefore creating and finishing the card game in a span of 2 years would make sense.
Considering that Pegasus was brainwashed by the Millennium Eye during this period and he was focusing heavily on resurrecting the game and the God cards, he couldn’t have started adopting the orphans at that time. So it’s possible he began adopting them after he sealed the God cards. The Tenma twins look fairly young in one of the flashbacks (early teens?), so about five years later they’d be about as old as Yugi and co.
And that marks the end of this analysis. Comments and feedback are appreciated! :]
