A mark of your station is not just the clothes you wear. A pauper in robes of a noble is still a pauper, a noble in the clothes of a pauper is still a nobleman. Losing a cheap haori does not affect your status as a shinigami captain.
A cape does not make you a better shinigami either, Kamina.

Every time I perform my duty of doing a patrol of this community, I am left with an incurable headache for the rest of day.
