Midday on Midway ~*~
It was mid-afternoon on Midway. The sun's rays beat down on those visitors who were brave enough to walk about in the high heat.
Jack stood in the shade of a tree by the exit of the Tunnel of Love ride, feeling slightly down. After lunch he'd asked Donna, Martha and Sarah Jane to ride in a boat with him, but none of them were willing to take him up on his offer. He had been mildly hurt when they'd looked at each other and rolled their eyes. The Doctor and Rose had shaken their heads, chuckling, and then wandered off alone again. The other three ladies had gone off to play some Black Jack, leaving Jack to his own devices.
He'd then walked around the grounds, trying to catch the eye of someone, but there were still no takers. He'd never missed Ianto as much as he did in this moment. He'd been having so much fun with this gang, but now that they were having some downtime, he was feeling lonely. He had flirted with all the women, but beyond that there was nothing happening. It was like he'd lost his mojo or something. Or maybe it was his relationship with Ianto - whatever it was he still wasn't sure - that had affected him and he was giving off some sort of weird "do not touch" vibe.
Jack was taken out of his brooding when he heard the familiar laughter of the Doctor and Rose echoing from inside the tunnel. This surprised him considering he hadn't thought they were interested. Obviously he'd read them wrong.
He squinted to look into the semi-darkness and saw a boat slowly coming out to the light. The further it came out, the more he saw, and boy did he see more than he'd expected.
Rose and the Doctor were lip-locked, Rose appearing to have been the initiator as she was practically straddling him. Her hands ran through his hair and Jack noticed that many of the Doctor's shirt buttons were undone. But the Time Lord didn't seem to mind since he was quite into the kiss, his hands grasping at her jacket, then moving down to her waist.
Jack felt like a voyeur watching them, but he didn't mind and it wouldn't be the first time. He was a bit surprised though. He knew they'd been close when he'd first met them, but they'd struck him as almost old-fashioned in their affections: hugging and hand-holding; longing looks rather than long, passionate snogs. He guessed things had changed quite a bit after he had been separated from them. But one thing hadn't changed: it was just as beautiful watching them now as it had been then. It gave him an old, familiar pang of desire: not sexual, but instead wanting what they had. Yes he'd had his fair share of lovers, but that wasn't the same. What the Doctor and Rose had was a much deeper connection, and something that would last longer than a quick snog and a shag.
Appearing to suddenly realize that they were no longer within the protective darkness of the tunnel, they pulled apart, glancing around somewhat guiltily. Jack moved around the tree, keeping himself hidden from view. Somehow he didn't think they'd appreciate his voyeuristic tendencies.
After a couple of minutes he tempted fate and glanced around the trunk. They were gone, their boat empty and waiting for another couple.
Jack sighed and found himself thinking of Ianto again. Maybe it was time he got home, he thought.
