It's used in medical and scientific literature all the time. I read enough research papers these days that I've found myself using it casually too. She probably didn't even think about the fact that it's not that common a word in the rest of the world.
Hmm...fascinating. Well that makes perfect sense then. I mean, the context she used it in wasn't related to anything medical, but I guess it's a word she is used to. You learn something new every day.

Oh, you do want to know. It's one of the "interest groups" on the dating site www.nerdpassions.com, which was our amusement at work this morning for several hours (Fridays = not as productive). Other interest groups include Geek, Geeky Nerd, Nerdy Geek, Linux, Time Shifting, and oh so much more.
