Does anyone know of coffee-shops or that sort of place that offer free wireless internet to their customers? A friend of mine in another state told me their dunkin donuts does this....but (a) I don't know of any near squirell hill/oakland/waterfront area (which is closest to me) and (b) I'd rather just be in a coffee shop. I ask simply because it ( Read more... )

Pretty sure all Panera Breads do, and there's a Starbucks on E. Carson that might.

Caribou Coffee in Oakland (and probably the one in South Side Works) has free wifi and aaaamazing chai (yes I used to work for Starbucks).

There's also supposed to be free wi-fi at Schenley Plaza Park in Oakland. I have not tried it yet, but sitting out under the big tent with my laptop on a nice breezy day sounds lovely.

I'm not reading the other responses, so apologies if I'm repeating any.

The Beehive on Carson (South Side)
Tuscany Cafe on Carson (South Side)
True on Western (North Side)
Hotdogma on Oliver (Downtown)
Panera on Forbes (Oakland)

Apologies if I'm repetitious.

The Squirrel Hill's Carnegie Library (at intersection of Forbes and Murray) also has free wi-fi.

It's true that the Sq. Hill Panera's wi-fi often doesn't work. 61c Cafe is great though (it plays good music), and...there's another free wi-fi cafe that's more tea oriented further down in Murray but I've forgotten the name.

Silky's, the bar on the intersection of Darlington and Murray, also has free wi-fi. It closes at 2am.

The squill library wireless seems to have been downgraded from "just works" to "only port 80 (i.e. web stuff) works, and only if you use their proxy, and only certain sites are allowed"

are these same restrictions on the wifi at the main branch of the library?

I think I noticed a wireless network while at the main branch which failed to work in the same way that the squill branch did when the proxy settings weren't set right, so it's entirely possible they are the same.
