Save Squirrel Hill!

Jul 19, 2008 08:56

A plan is afoot to raze the properties at the corner of Forward and Murray, from the Squirrel Hill Theater to the vacant Poli's. While I certainly agree that something needs to be done with the former Poli's, I'm very upset by the plans to get rid of our theater*, Tango Cafe, Pizza Amier, and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center (the karate school ( Read more... )

I wish I was more surprised by this. With Greenfield going more middle-class (after everyone got shoved out of Squirrel Hill since they couldn't afford it anymore), this isn't a surprise ( ... )

and it makes sure that the majority of the people that can live there are wealthier families, young childless couples, and better off single people.

Too true everywhere. No one wants to make the standard of living better, they just want to force the "poor" folks out. (Poor meaning "doesn't have enough extra income">)

Pretty much.

It's hitting the lower and middle-classes hardest...just like everything else right now.

I remember watching a completely out-of-focus Big Fish at the Squirrel Hill Theater once upon a time.

Even so, I'd still be sad to see it close.

The last movie I saw there was Dogma, and the screen quality was so bad that I did not get to read the opening scenes until I got the DVD.

This is a problem that has been there for a while.

Manor Theater is pointedly NOT part of Pittsburgh Filmmakers.

Sad fact - theaters are going out. Bellevue Cinemas closed a few years back and will never return since they converted it into a Family Dollar.

I still miss The Plaza in Bloomfield, now known as (yet another) Starbucks.

Bethel Cinema for me....

Is there anyone developing theaters with beer and pizza, like the McMenamin's theaters in Portland?

This being Pennsylvania, there's probably a law against it.

Seriously, I would welcome a movie pub if there was one in Pittsburgh. Hell, even if it didn't sell alcohol but had good food, that would be enough.
Right now the closest I can come to that is bringing takeout Indian food to the drive-in.

That theater started getting crushed by the Loew's at the Waterfront, honestly. If the owner would *ever* have put money back into either of the theaters, they might have competed, but no such luck.

Would this affect Forward Lanes, the bowling alley in there?

This kills me cause I hate Loew's at the Waterfront with a PASSION! It was a joyous victory for me when the Loew's in N. Versailles was closed because the Destinta took away all their business.

I am just glad that I live closer to the South Side Works now.

I'm new in town and haven't finished exploring all the local choices...what's not to like about the Waterfront Lowes/AMC? I thought their $5 tickets before 4:00pm were pretty cool.

It's way overpriced, and I have never had a good experience there.

People talking through the movie despite being told numerous times by myself and the management to please shut the fuck up. Paying 36 bucks a ticket to sit in the upper, private seating, and getting to hear a baby wail for two and a half fucking hours.

The baby was a one-time thing, but the talking was every other film I ever saw there.

I do realize that it is more a problem with the people then the theater itself, but I do not have these problems when I go to other theaters.

I will not waste my money going there.

Why must we keep raping our neighborhoods with upscale crap that the majority of pittsburghers can't even afford? This is bullshit.

obviously people can afford it or they wouldn't build it. Pittsburgh is on the up and up.

Er.. not really. A lot of this stuff is being built on speculation. A lot of developments are still quite empty, and some of them are a few years old already (see: Summerset, the condos above the Shadyside Giant Eagle, the Bartlet Street development).
