Hello, Neighbors!

Nov 17, 2007 13:35

I just moved to the city last Saturday, and so far everything has been absolutely wonderful. My partner and I can't seem to stop smiling, and we become downright giddy over the tiniest of things -- the quaint charm, the close proximity of everything, the hometown feel. We've just spent a year living in NYC (so maybe we've just been on-edge for 13 ( Read more... )

1. Damned if I know. I've been here five years and I either drive it or take the T.

Perhaps I need to prioritize so "fix my mother's old van" is at the top of my to-do list!

1. From Allegheny General Hospital to
... anywhere downtown,
... or to Oakland,
... or to the South Side (Station Square or the Southside Works -- I know they aren't close to each other).

Thanks! I grew up in Latrobe, went to college in Edinboro, and then spent a year in NYC. Having lived NEAR Pittsburgh for 23 years, I know virually nothing about it (but am enjoying it so far)!

There are a ton of buses that run from at or near AGH to downtown. There are at least eight of them I can think of off the top of my head that go down East Ohio St. You'll want to board on the side closest to AGH ( ... )

Thank you -- especially for saying which side of the street to board on! That's such a little thing, but it helps so much!

1) The bus system is very confusing. Maybe tell us what routes are listed at the stop nearest you and we can help you navigate from there.

2) I can't help either, I'm a First Commonwealth customer.

3) I'm a big fan of Pizza Parma, there's one downtown.

Thank you for the pizza recommendation!

If you walk to federal you can get the 500 that will take you right into Oakland through downtown. Of course, any bus you get will take you into downtown and from there its very easy to pick up a 71 or 61 that will take you into Oakland.

As far as pizza, locally there is Pasta Too. They're right on Federal less than a block up from North. You should also Try Max's Allgheny Tavern (Suismon), Sweet Georgia Brown's (James Street), The Park House (East Ohio), Legends (North) and Sam's Memphis BBQ (Federal). No pizza at these places but good food. You should also check out Amani's (suismon as well I believe) for your morning coffee. For beer purchases I usually use Caruso's (On North Taylor http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/specialreports/onthejob/s_523042.html) in the War Streets itself. Doug's Market on Arch has a decent butcher there.

As for banks I use PNC and they've always been good to me.

I LOVE Maxs Allegheny Tavern! I've added all the others to my To Eat list. Thank you!

Welcome to Pittsburgh! I can't comment on the bus system, since I usually drive, or take the T. As for banking, I use National City :)

Thanks!

I wish they'd hurry up and extend the T to the northside!

I'm fairly new to Pittsburgh too, so I just recently went through all the things you're going through. I'm at Citizens Bank. When it comes to free savings, they have the highest interest rate of, well, any bank I found here. I haven't had any problems with them. That's not saying all that much though, I don't try to do much other then store and withdraw my money :)

The bus system is tough. I'd find a local municipality (for me it was the library). A lot of them will stock all of the hand held bus schedules for your neighborhood. Google Transit has it's faults, but it's the best system I've found so far. I just have a lot of pdf's of the hand helds on my desktop. I've found the best (ie easiest) place to get them from is buskarma.com. You'll find a few key routes for you soon. As frustrating as it can be to figure out what buses go where, the routes are actually fairly convenient!

Good luck and welcome!

I'm pretty certain I'll be going with Citizens, too. There's one roughly a five-minute walk from my apartment, so it just seems the most convenient. Like you, all I need to do is store and withdraw money so it isn't under my mattress awaiting a thief.

Thanks!
