This is probably not helpful, but you know - what the hell. I get my hair done at Lewis' Hair Salon on Aiken by John Simpson. He went to school locally - I think he said his school closed, so it was probably that one you found that is closed. However, he's very hip and very in tune with the industry and could possibly point you in the right direction? I'm not sure. Here is a link with his bio (scroll down).

I researched this awhile ago because my sister was thinking about moving to Pittsburgh with me so she could go to beauty school. The Pittsburgh Beauty Academy sounded like it was really good, but it was shut down because of shady financial aid practices. The only other thing I really found was Empire Beauty School on McKnight Rd (http://www.empire.edu/). I guess it is a chain beauty school, and I have no idea how good they are, but it would be pretty easily bus-accessible from downtown. She ended up not coming here because she really couldn't find any options that she liked. Sorry that I don't have first-hand experiences with any local schools.

But I do think we should start an OMGWTFAIDWML club.

I've heard good things about South Hills Beauty Academy (http://www.shnhbeauty.com/)both by customers and students and it's on the subway line if that's of help to you.
