so, I've done it

This isn't going to thrill some of you. I've decided to back Obama this year-- Palin is simply too big a threat for me to not vote for the person most able to counter that influence. I signed up on the website to volunteer and located my local office (which is in Falls Church, so it's nice and close). I also signed up w/the Gilmore people, because ( Read more... )

Good grief, no, I hadn't seen that one. Now that I'm on the Obama side, I really need to figure out some good blogs to read. I'm so illiterate about liberals, I only know DailyKos (and then mainly read Dogemperor's blog there). Feel free to suggest any that you read. I applied for the Obama LJ comm, waiting to see if I'm approved.

I think Failin' Palin only talks about sexism and women's issues when it'll get media play. I'm appalled that any woman is falling for her tricks.

I'm going to a filter for stuff like this after today, I think, because I have such a conservative flist and don't really want to rant at them every day. :/ Want on it?

I love Factcheck. I especially love how they shredded this Big Fat Lie of an ad that McCain/Palin put out about "Obama disrespecting her". I'm sad at how McCain's running this campaign. This isn't the McCain I voted for in the 2000 primaries.

I'm appalled at how many Independents seem to like her. That scares me.

You need to have confidence in who you're voting for. What's difficult for me is that I've been strongly for McCain since 2000, when he first ran against W. It's hard for me to pick up and leave now.

I can understand your dislike of Palin. Personally, I wish that the ticket was McCain/Lieberman. I would have been an extremely happy monkey. However, I knew it wasn't gonna happen.

I have absolutely no problem in anyone who crosses party lines because in the end, you are voting for the person and not the party. That's why I've never actually registered Republican, although I identify as one.

The problem is fiscal conservatives are not social conservatives, and there are too many of the latter in today's GOP. What needs to happen is a renaissance of Roosevelt Republicanism, coupled with a dose of Calvin Coolidge doctrine.

I've still got reservations about Obama, but there are things I genuinely like about him too (including his efforts to craft a health plan that helps everyone, including-- in response to criticism-- chronically ill people like me). I think his heart's in the right place on a lot of things, but I wish he weren't such a ginormous n00b. This would be much simpler if it were Hillary instead. I'm surprised at how much I've kind of come to like her. It's a weird year, up is down and down is up ( ... )

Agreed. Fiscal conservatives, limited-government conservatives, libertarians, foreign policy cons, and moderates need to band together and hand the Pat Robertsons of the world their walking papers. No more litmus tests based on social issues, fiddling while the country burns under recession, outsourced jobs, health care debt, and onerous gas and heat bills. No more knocking at the bedroom doors of law-abiding citizens while terrorists knock at our country's doors.

I agree on that. I'm tired of the fiddling like Nero, and I'm tired of going broke paying for meds for a chronic disease. I'm also sick and tired of no-knock, unsigned warrants...where cops break into peoples houses (all too often the wrong one), and shoot innocent people by mistake...or get shot by the householder thinking its a home invasion (and then gets held up as a horrible cop killer).

I've lost count of the number of people I've met over the years who would *gladly* vote for a Republican if there just were a candidate who's socially liberal or moderate. That's my ( ... )

Gilmore has an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore, but otherwise I like him. :) His campaign office seemed happy to hear from a potential volunteer, but no one has contacted me yet to actually give me details. We'll see if they do. I'd like to divide time between the two campaigns if I can. I think it's important that Gilmore, and other GOP candidates willing to defy the Christian Right, wins. If he does not, it sends a bad message, that candidates who don't pander can't win.

That's my gf for instance. If there was a pro-choice moderate, she'd vote for them. It's the bulk of my flist. It's almost every gamer I've ever met. It's a huge, huge chunk of Generation X and Generation Y. So far, neither campaign has in my mind figured out how to reach these folks. McCain has plain lost them-- you're seeing that here with all but one person who has responded. Lots of former Bush voters who are defecting to Obama this year. But Obama isn't doing too wonderfully either. He's trying to make with the faith talk, as someone on your LJ said. I don't know ( ... )

You know: You and I don't see eye-to-eye often, but you are fascinatingly smart. I hope you don't mind the friends, I don't care if you return the favor.

Thank you, that's quite a compliment. I'd be happy to return the favor, long as you don't mind the reality that a lot of what you and Cal talk about goes straight over my head.
