Women's movement

Thanks to everyone who came out to the opening this afternoon. I had a really great time, and hope you did too.

I had two works in the show, the family tree painting I'd posted earlier, Ties that Bind, and this one, A Woman's Place (2002):

Thank you muchly. They're fun to make. I have a couple of others in various states of completion that speak about similar topics. I'll have to post the others at some point.

I'm curious about the keys. What do they mean to you? You can wait to answer that...I know that art is very personal, both for the artist and the um...what would you call the person viewing art? Consumer? Participant? Third party? Anyway. I'm trying to formulate my thoughts on the keys in particular because they seem important. I really like this piece.

And I have to say thank you to you for writing and posting so many pictures of art. I've always had an appreciation for art but it has definitely been on the periphery and not as close to me, personally, as music has always been. By your posts, it's making me think more about art, its place in society, and what it means to me.

Not consumer... participant, sure, I dig that. I typically recognize someone who views the art as simply, the viewer ( ... )

The first time I looked at it I didn't notice the keys lying on the bottom of the box. It was the ones that were flying in the air - perhaps still out of reach - that caught my attention.

You make me laugh.

and btw that random bobby pin in front was perfectly placed. it was charming.

The curls were a little unwieldy there and needed to be tamed. But I'm glad you were so charmed. ;P

Yes, the keys are attached to the springs, and yes, they are actually door stops. The box was originally done for a spring luncheon table setting (spring, get it?). Doooiiinnnng.

i guess the conflict that it makes me feel is that the key is the way out, but the spring holds it in. its like a chain jerk....you *thought* you had the way over the hill, but then, the very plan itself has resulted in a throat jarring tossback to the old roles.

Ich musse dieses arts superdenken.

Me too! It would have been good to meet you in person. If you can get up to Artomatic sometime between May 9-June 15, though, you can see my work then. :)
