A funny story, and a philosophical questions

Feb 16, 2012 00:17

So, I've been in this community for a while, not counting the period of time when I was banned. In that time I've been an undergraduate studying philosophy in cognitive science, been working at a tech company and reading a respectable amount of philosophy on the side. Now I am in grad school at a program that is roughly "about the internet" but ( Read more... )

It's best to just refuse to engage with david_deacon. He's an ass, but has not yet (to my knowledge) violated the terms of his parole.

Refusing to "engage" with me won't solve anything or enlighten anyone. I try whenever I post anywhere in LJ to make my position clear. I've endured a lot of reflexive hatred for that from LJ feminists--and that apparently now includes 4inquiries. I have gotten a lot of criticism on LJ from people who had no idea what my position on the subject under discussion was, or even worse, who tried to tell me what my position was.

This is quite an ironic claim, since you indeed made your position on feminism clear and I directed my criticism at exactly your position, but you failed to engage with the limits of your position:

Your own position: "Although I'm not a woman, I qualify as a feminist because I believe in the equality of men and women. This isn't enough to satisfy many "feminists" on LJ, however. (Sorry, it's a personal sore subject for me.)" This is under my post entitled "West on Truth."

My response was, How is that feminism? I mean, I guess it is feminism in the sense that "equal but racially separate facilities" is anti-racist. But of course "equal but racially separate facilities" is not anti- ( ... )

I want you to refrain from posting your thoughts in this community.

Your amusing rant has been duly noted. I recommend a hysterectomy.

Also, that was totally not the comment to which I intended to reply. Oops.

Because the context, their demand for confessions before a tribunal, was so over the top that it was impossible to take them seriously.

Right. To the point that freely submitting to it is almost in itself an affirmation of its underlying silliness.

(One probably ought to bear in mind, tho', that I'm approaching the whole issue from the perspective of having once served as an undergrad philosophy club's Minister of Culture. We also had a Minister of Defense.)

So it seems I've done the impossible.

If apperception and mendaciloquent were trying to be "funny," I didn't get their humor either.

Sorry, I never learned anything from apperception and mendaciloquent except how to bully people and show disrespect to them. Not that I would. I learned how NOT to treat people by watching how they behaved and just did the opposite.

So you did the opposite of bullying and disrespecting by being dismissive of feminism that you don't even understand? I don't think so. Your ideas suck and you should just leave this community because no one benefits from your contributions.

My experience in this community convinced me that it would be a really good idea to appropriate Frankfurt School ideas into a computational world view in order to one day win the argument.

That never happens. The police never arrest each other. Trolling is only used in the third person, i.e. "his" trolling or "their" trolling, never in the first person, i.e. "our" trolling.

I disagree.

Recall that in this community in I think late 2006, gerbilsage made a bet with i_am_lane that he could get himself banned from this community despite this forum's absentee moderatorship. gerbilsage then proceeded to troll this community so hard that two trolls, apperception and mendaciloquent, were able to convince absent moderator to give them privileges in order to clean up the mess. THAT'S when all hell broke loose. The lunatics were running the asylum ( ... )

Interesting. I never knew the story of how apperception and mendaciloquent ended up in charge.
