A funny story, and a philosophical questions

Feb 16, 2012 00:17

So, I've been in this community for a while, not counting the period of time when I was banned. In that time I've been an undergraduate studying philosophy in cognitive science, been working at a tech company and reading a respectable amount of philosophy on the side. Now I am in grad school at a program that is roughly "about the internet" but ( Read more... )

Well we already established that you have no idea what feminism is, so it isn't clear what you are even rolling your eyes at.

We haven't "established" anything. And even feminists can't agree on the definition of feminism.

We certainly have established that you have no idea of what feminism is, but the evidence is being screened because it is a link; the link points to you stating your own position - "Although I'm not a woman, I qualify as a feminist because I believe in the equality of men and women. This isn't enough to satisfy many "feminists" on LJ, however. (Sorry, it's a personal sore subject for me.)" This is under my post entitled "West on Truth."

My response was, How is that feminism? I mean, I guess it is feminism in the sense that "equal but racially separate facilities" is anti-racist. But of course "equal but racially separate facilities" is not anti-racist, and the mere belief in the equality of men and women doesn't make one a feminist. So why would any feminist on LJ find your statement of "feminism" satisfying?

Now you did not respond, and my argument and challenge are valid, so we've established that you have no idea what feminism is.

And even feminists can't agree on the definition of feminism.Sure they can, and do. The disputes ( ... )

If you would perhaps read my profile page more closely, you would see that (as a general rule) I have no tolerance for both Cornel West and feminists, especially of the LJ variety.

Or just leave the community since you're not welcome.

You certainly argue like a feminist. But I think we are off the point, here.

This response is a non sequitur. So I would offer your own advice to you (as you stated under zentiger's comment), that refusing to engage with your problems (which have been pointed out) won't solve your problems or enlighten you. And until you take your own advice in this matter, I want you to refrain from posting your thoughts in this community.

I want you to go out to the kitchen and make me a sandwich. Chop-chop!

Am I the only one reading that post ironically, then? I mean, I was reminded of the Soviet writers that registered dissent by giving their public tributes in terms so hyperbolic they were impossible to take seriously...

Where's the hyperbole?

In my imagination, perhaps. Then again that was surely true of at least some of the writers I alluded to, as well.

No, I think a lot of people were left guessing.

Because it isn't clear that I changed drastically for the better after I was banned? Or what indicates that I would not be totally appreciative of my disciplining/banning for the reasons stated?

"Because it isn't clear that I changed drastically for the better after I was banned? "

I'd say because it isn't clear that the banning was the real impetus for said changes rather than maybe a proximate cause at most. People typically don't complete an entire degree (let alone two) for the sole purpose of being readmitted to a LiveJournal community.

Well this isn't a typical community to me. I've never found a community as engaging and helpful as this one, and I'm not referring to the mods here but lane, zentiger, and especially anosognosia. They are smarter than a good number of my university teachers, or better explainers than some of them, in any case. If you know another community where I can talk to people like this, please let me know so I can try to get in.

I don't doubt or disagree with any of that. I'd just add that none of it preculdes injecting some irony into the process of submitting to a tribunal.
