Bulk vegan foods?

Jun 26, 2007 02:14

Here's a question. I'm on the exec board of a student group at Temple. In the beginning of the Fall semester, we want to do a kickoff barbecue thing. Despite the fact that I'm our lone vegan, I want to make sure we have some vegan options for new/propsective members at this event. (El oh el, I just realized that's a blatantly shameless plug ( Read more... )

I think you can probably bulk order from any grocery or natural foods store store... But for sure you could from Mariposa Food Co-op (you'd have to join the co-op, though) or Weaver's Way Co-op.

What group is this for?

It's for Temple College Democrats. (I know, I know. I don't want to really talk a whole lot about my personal political stances on a public entry. Suffice it to say that I am a registered Dem and a Green at heart. I know that might sound a little defensive, but I feel like I need to make that distinction sometimes.)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to do this and still be able to provide veg*n options for everyone. Nothing grates on my nerves more than Meatfest 2007 at any "liberal" function. GEE THANKS!!!!

I've tended to be the only vegan on the Temple University Graduate Student Association's executive board. My fellow members are generally considerate of vegans and vegetarians, though.

In terms of cheap, Mariposa's mark-up would be just 20% above wholesale.

Out of the handful of people who are veg*n (or who eat very, very little meat), I think I'm the only vocal group member. Luckily, now that I'm on our Exec board, I think I can make things a little more accomodating and we'll have less food oversights. :)

Thanks for the tips!

Costo sells Dr Praeger's California Veggie Burgers in bulk. They're certified kosher and certified vegan. I'm a big fan of them.

Otherwise.. I'd echo the suggestion from someone above to ask a local coop/natural foods store, or even Whole Foods, for a bulk discount of some sort.

I've seen them in Whole Foods before but have never tried them. Maybe I will grab a small box to see how I like them! I personally am not a huge fan of Boca burgers (though I like the crumbles). It's something about the texture that bugs me. Part of it might be because they seem to be the standard vegan patty that every damn place offers. (Of course, I feel bad for griping because a Boca burger is better than nothing.) Thanks!

we have a membership at costco, my husband drives by one on the way home from his work, and i could very easily walk by the gayborhood to or from my work. just let me know if you'd need my help.
(you're still in the gayborhood?)

there is a BJ's down by the bend of 76 below university city. i don't know how accessible it is to public transit though.

Ahhh. I didn't realize there was out round there. The only city BJ's I know of is the one on Oregon Ave (? I'm pretty sure)....ummm...I think it's by Girard Estates, but I'm a little sketchy on that. All I know is that if you cross over Broad on Oregon and drive to where it starts getting a little more desolate, all of a sudden a strip mall pops up. Okay, so it's one of those times that I just know it when I see it, LOL.

And the gayborhood went bye bye for me. :( I'm living in Mt. Holly with some friends right now. It's a major pain in my ass, but we're working on getting back into the city ASAP. (Hopefully by the 15th, but that might get pushed back to August 1st.) At least we've got a vehicle, for now, so that makes it a little less aggravating. NJTransit runs through fairly regularly, but it's TWO HOURS to get from there to Market St. WOE IS ME. :(((

essene, a health food store) at 4th and bainbridge does bulk orders, and also gives a 10% discount when you buy a case of anything (unless it is already on sale).

Oooooh pretty! Thanks for the tip. I might check out some of that stuff for myself. I wish I knew about them when I was living with my last partner; he wouldn't feel like doing dishes, so he'd always use damn disposables. It would drive me BATTY. The closest compromise we could come to was using recyclable plastic wear, but even that bothered the crap outta me.
