Mr. Darcy is a prick and actually sort of admits this himself. He is a vaguely drawn character onto whom our thoughts and aspirations are projected.

And, of course, the weird thing is that it is usually once one "sees" Pemberley, like Elizabeth, that Mr. Darcy is immutably established in the reader's mind as a good sort of fellow.

I would like to counter that one of the things that is remarkable about Mr. Darcy is that he does have an attribute most women are looking for: He is a good listener.

Not even Tilney has that. I always sensed that Henry was a little too smugly satisfied with his superior wit. As we may have discussed earlier (I think you may have even pointed this out to me), but he does dismiss Catherine's fears all too easily.
