“Sir, can you hear me?”

Jack groaned and fought to get his eyes open, lifting a hand to his face, only to have it pulled away. “Colonel O’Neill?”

He opened one eye, the other one not really responding. Figures in hazmat suits stood over him. All around him the museum lay in ruins. “Daniel.” Jack struggled to sit up, but insistent hands pushed him down again.

“I need you to stay calm, Colonel.” Janet. He recognized that voice as Janet Frasier.

“I am calm.” Jack growled. Everything felt strange, out of focus.

“Okay, let’s get him quarantined.”

Jack tried to protest as the sides of a containment unit came up around him, but the sound just bounced back at him as undecipherable noise. The whole thing started moving, rolling.

Jack could see the sky as they exited the building, then the ceiling of an ambulance. He tried a couple of times to say something, but his voice was muddled and strange.

After a long time, the ambulance got dark and the air got cold. He drifted, slept. He woke again to bright lights. The room around him was white and bright and he sat up fast, too fast judging from the way it made his head swim.

“Hello?” He eased down off the hospital bed, bare feet on a cold floor. There was nothing in the room but the bed. Nothing. “Hello?” He called out as he circled to the only door. Of course it was locked.

“Colonel O’Neill.”

He turned, finding an observation window. “General.” He frowned. “What’s going on?”

“How are you feeling, Colonel?” Dr. Frasier asked.

Jack looked up at them, crossing his arms. “I’m fine, Doc. A little sore in the shoulder, a might chilly. Wondering why I’m in here and you’re up there.”

“One thing at a time, Colonel.” General Hammond said.

“Colonel, I know this must be frustrating, but we have to proceed with caution. Can you tell me what you remember since you and Doctor Jackson went off world?”

Jack frowned and moved back toward the bed. “Off world? No. He dragged me to some exhibit on some new find in Egypt.”

“What do you remember before that?” Dr. Frasier asked.

Jack shook his head. “We were prepping for a mission. P3X-9902. SG-12 found some ruins they wanted Daniel to look at.” He frowned harder. He could remember suiting up, betting with Teal’c on how long it would take Daniel to declare it a significant find, then the next thing he knew he was at the museum with Daniel and all hell was breaking loose. “Where’s Daniel?”

“Colonel O’Neill, please stay calm.”

“Stop telling me to stay calm and tell me what in the hell is going on!”

“You and Dr. Jackson went missing on P3X-9902, Colonel.” General Hammond said. “You were gone for two days before Teal’c and Major Carter found you. When they did, you were both hallucinating.”

“Hallucinating?”

“We had to sedate you just to bring you home.”

Jack sat on the bed and inhaled. “And Daniel?”

“His condition was worse. We had everyone in quarantine. Sam and Teal’c have had no hallucinations and all their test results came back clean. You and Daniel both had high levels of some drug in your system. Your last test came back clean. Once we’re sure you won’t suffer any further effects, we’ll let you go.”

“And Daniel?” Jack asked again.

Dr. Frasier didn’t answer right away. “He’s stable for the moment.”

Jack didn’t like the sound of that. Or the fact that he was stuck here where he couldn’t help.
