He exhaled before he opened the door and adjusted his mask. They had neutralized the hallucinogenic effect of the toxin released into the air through Daniel's open wounds, but Daniel’s life was still in danger.

Jack still didn’t remember much. Real memories mixed with the hallucinations until he couldn’t tell what was real. He’d dislocated his shoulder at some point, that was obvious and his head was sore from either the lingering effects of the toxin or hitting his head.

Daniel lay in the center of the room amid machines and monitors. His skin was pale and slicked with sweat, his chest and stomach bare showing the wounds where the creature had punctured his skin.

A nurse nodded at him, laying a clean bandage over the worst of the two wounds and taping it down as Jack pulled a rolling stool closer to the bed. Daniel’s eyes opened, focusing slowly on Jack. One corner of his mouth tugged up as though he was trying to smile.

Jack covered his hand with his own, his smile strained. “Hey.”

“That bad?” Daniel croaked out.

“No, you look great.” Jack shook his head. “Be up and out of here before you know it.”

“Liar.” Daniel turned his hand over so that their palms pressed together.

“Doc Frasier says the antibiotics are working.”

The nurse finished taping down bandages and moved away. Jack let his palm rub over Daniel’s.

“Sorry.” Daniel said after a few minutes of silence.

Jack frowned at him. “What for?”

Daniel grimaced and closed both eyes. Before Jack could ask what was wrong, he felt the tremor. Light at first, in Daniel’s hand, then his fingers curled up under Jack's and his body started convulsing. "Hey, a little help here!" Jack called, bringing Janet and a bunch of others running. He backed off, watching helplessly as they surrounded him, the buzz of their medical chatter washing over him. Don't die. Jack thought as he moved away to give them room. Not again.

He pressed himself against the wall and watched as Daniel slowly stopped convulsing and still they continued to work over him. Finally, Janet pulled back, settling her stethoscope around her neck and turning to him.

"He's sedated for now. I need to run some tests."

"He's going to be okay though."

She didn't look him in the eye. "It doesn't look good, Colonel."

"No." Jack shook his head. "This is Daniel." He swallowed around the fear. "If anyone can beat this…." He didn't finish the thought. He couldn't, not when Daniel looked so small there among the tubes and machines and nurses.

It wasn't as bad as the time before.

Before so much. Before Jack had figured it all out. Before he'd understood. Then he couldn't even touch Daniel without causing pain. He'd been forced to stand by and watch him melt away.

"We should let him rest."

"I'm not leaving." Jack said, his eyes still on Daniel's chest, making sure it was still moving.

"Sir, I-"

"I'm not leaving."

She sighed and walked away, and Jack moved slowly back to the bed and the stool he'd abandoned. He sat slowly, his hand sliding over Daniel's.

The next seizure was worse. Sam and Teal'c both came by and Dr. Frasier tried to explain to him all the things she was doing to try to save Daniel, but most of it went over his head because he could only focus on one thought. Don't die.

He repeated it like a mantra as he held Daniel's hand. Two tiny words that held everything he could let himself feel.
