In my experience with fleas and cats, I've found that bathing is great went combined with treating the house (especially the carpet) and a medication. I like the stuff that you buy to put on the back of the cat's neck. It's sort of slimy, but it really works. You probably know this from previous experiences, but once you have made the cat not-so-tasty, the fleas will start thinking that you look pretty yummy. And the lay their eggs in the carpet(*yuck*), hence the need for treating the carpet and any cat bedding.

My last fun-flea fact is that you might want to watch China for tape worms. I found out from the vet last time I had a flea problem (would you believe that was about 7 or 8 years ago?) that cats can get tape worms from eating bugs ... including (you got it) fleas.

oh yuk, i will have to watch for that.

thanks for the tip on the carpet - i had no idea! i will have to pick up some powder for the carpet next week and deal with that once i'm back.

thanks for the good advice! :) have a great weekend!

No problem! Flea sprays for the carpet are more stinky than the powder, but they're a little more flexible (you can spray other things than just the carpet).

One other thing: you can get the medicine to put on the back of the cat's neck at Walmart or some discount store, and I've found that it works fine. Some people swear that you should only use the stuff you get at the vet's office, but my experience is that Hartz is cheaper and gets the job done.

I guess it's sort of scary that I can comment at length about cats and fleas. I guess it's a product of having my two cats for 12 years ... and of having had cats in the house since I was born! :)

i've had cats my whole life (except for three years in college) but have never had flea issues with them. strange, but true.
