Christmas Morning

Follows this.He woke up feeling a bit disorientated, vaguely remembering regaining consciousness some time during the night and after a few words from the doctor, falling into a restless sleep again. The pain was still there, but nowhere near as bad as it had been when he firs woke up last night. Grateful for small favors, Patrick allowed the nurse ( Read more... )

As Tess poured Patrick some water Brendan felt his phone start to vibrate, being on silent as it was. He reached into his pocket and pulled it out, seeing it was the bar's number on the caller ID.

He answered, the call being from Sam telling him the young kitchen hand was on his way with their dinner.

"Looks like dinner is on its way," he announced to the other two after he'd thanked Sam and shoved his phone back in his pocket.

"Naaah." Brendan shook his head, bumping his nose against Patrick's. "Wise? Maybe, but old? Give it a few more years before you qualify for that, y' bastard," he joked.

Patrick smiled. "All right - reckon I'll settle for being a wise bastard then, although I better remember to do or say something to live up to that." He tilted his head a bit to enable him to press his lips to Brendan's before glancing at the plates of food, the various aromas coming from the food reminding him of the fact that, despite Brendan's efforts during lunch, he really hadn't eaten an awful lot today.

Standing back up again as they both grinned Brendan looked at the meals and hoped Tess wouldn't take too much time finding something to drink.

"You going to be OK with the food?" he asked Patrick, putting the man's cutlery back on the edge of his plate when he'd finished cutting it up, and pulling the table closer for him.

Meanwhile, Tess had been trying to get a variety of drinks that she could also carry; they'd given her a bag and she now had a few sodas, some containers of orange juice, and even some milk. She'd been tempted by the coffee but had decided maybe it wasn't best for a sick person. Now she made her way back towards Patrick's room and paused outside of the door, not wanting to barge in and interrupt anything.

"Yeah, thanks, mate," Patrick said, a smile playing on his lips as Brendan finished cutting his food. "I reckon I can almost suck it through a straw right about now," he murmured, his eyes unconsciously darting from the plate of food to the door.

Brendan just rolled his eyes at the comment and ignored it. He saw movement at the door as Tess returned, pushing it open with her shoulder. "There you go, who said she'd got lost?" he joked, putting Patrick's cutlery down and going to give her a hand.

"Well, I wasn't the only one down there. Also, I had to make sure I got a good variety." She smiled and handed the bag of drinks to Brendan. "The strongest I could get was soda caffeine though."

"Well, that'll do. Can't really give the patient anything stronger as it's sure to screw with his medications and then we'd be in real strife." He carried the drinks to the table and they were soon all seated and eating the food which had started to cool.

"Just realising how damned hungry I am," he managed between mouthfuls.

Patrick smiled. "Obviously," he said dryly, poking at his food before finally taking a small bite himself. He wasn't surprised to find himself enjoying the food, he'd learned that he really couldn't go wrong with anything Sam had prepared. "It's not bad, really," he murmured thoughtfully.

"And Liadan's stew is excellent as always," Tess smiled, glad to see that Patrick and Brendan seemed happy.

Downing some of the soda Brendan agreed, then indicated his plate. "But y' have to admit, a good Christmas dinner, with roast pork, turkey, potatoes and pumpkin and all the trimmings can't be beaten. Just ... isn't Christmas without it."

"I reckon you have a point there, mate," Patrick said after swallowing a mouthful of food. After all, even in prison they had served turkey at Christmas, hadn't they? Or at least they'd said it was turkey anyway.

"Merry Christmas, boys." Tess held up her soda.

Brendan hastily swallowed his mouthful and grabbed the glass of soda, holding it up. "Yeah, merry Christmas," he agreed, touching his glass to Tess's and Patrick's once he'd picked it up. "First of many more I hope," he added, looking from one to the other.
