Christmas Morning

Follows this.He woke up feeling a bit disorientated, vaguely remembering regaining consciousness some time during the night and after a few words from the doctor, falling into a restless sleep again. The pain was still there, but nowhere near as bad as it had been when he firs woke up last night. Grateful for small favors, Patrick allowed the nurse ( Read more... )

As Tess poured Patrick some water Brendan felt his phone start to vibrate, being on silent as it was. He reached into his pocket and pulled it out, seeing it was the bar's number on the caller ID.

He answered, the call being from Sam telling him the young kitchen hand was on his way with their dinner.

"Looks like dinner is on its way," he announced to the other two after he'd thanked Sam and shoved his phone back in his pocket.

"I guess we should let him sleep," Tess whispered to Brendan.

"Naah, if he sleeps any more now he'll have trouble sleeping again tonight. Besides, it's time to eat! Don't want this getting cold. Sam'll have m' guts for garters if we don't clean these plates off." He started to unpack the food, the meals already on plates, the small containers holding gravy, cranberry sauce and some stuffing. The aromas soon filled the room and they set the table with everything and wheeled it across the middle of the bed so they could reach it all from the other side. Brendan carried his and Tess's plates around and put them on the large window ledge that ran behind where they would sit, and turned to wake Patrick.

If Brendan's voice hadn't been enough to wake him, the various aromas penetrating his nostrils would have. A bit confused to wake up to the smell of food, Patrick slowly opened his eyes, blinking a few times to adjust to the light, and then finally he realized what was happening. "Hey," he whispered, looking up into Brendan's face. "Didn't think I'd fall asleep again - "

While the two men talked, Tess set about getting things to drink. Being in the hospital there wasn't a vast array of choices. "I think I'm going to run down to the cafeteria to get drinks, unless we all want water."

"Sure," Brendan nodded. "Looks like we could use something. Sam seems to have forgotten that part of it. Guess he's used to the kitchen side, and forgets the bar doesn't travel with the food!"

Patrick remained silent, knowing there wasn't a chance of being allowed a beer or anything even remotely close to that, so water or tea - like he'd been drinking here for the past few days - would have to do.

"All right." She smiled at the two of them. "I'll just try to get some of everything so we all have a choice." She hurried out of the room.

"Don't go getting lost now, or dinner will get cold!" he told her as she hurried out. He turned and picked up Patrick's cutlery and started cutting the food on the man's plate into manageable sized pieces, in case Patrick wanted to help himself.

"You want me to wind the bed up a little more?" he asked, unsure how Patrick's back was faring now.

"Please," Patrick said, after all he'd been managing to more or less eat without any aid from Brendan for the last day or two and even after the difficult night - and rather emotional morning - he realized it probably would be a bit of a step back if Brendan would have to feed him again. "Thanks, mate," he added, already attempting to sit up a little on his own before Brendan had a chance to actually raise the bed.

"Hey, careful there," Brendan told him, putting the cutlery into one hand and picking up the bed controls from where they were hanging from the edge. He pressed the button to raise it, trying to help move the pillows down behind Patrick's back. "Don't want t' go and aggravate it again," he muttered, fussing a little.

"I'm fine," he murmured, and he should be as they'd given him enough painkillers to knock down an bloody elephant. That, however, didn't stop him from closing his eyes briefly and drawing a sigh of relief when his back was once again resting against the pillows. Patrick blinked his eyes open again and gave Brendan a small smile. "Really, Brendan, I'm OK," he added, reaching up with his good arm and closing his hand around the other man's wrist for a moment.

As Patrick's hand closed on his wrist Brendan stopped fussing, giving a small quirky grin when he looked at Patrick's hand. "Sorry."

He looked up at Patrick and saw the relief, satisfied he could indeed stop worrying. Instead he leaned down, pressing his lips to Patrick's, carefully still, as he murmured, "happy birthday."

Patrick returned the kiss. "Thank you," he murmured, their eyes met and he smiled, a genuine smile this time. "Do think you ought to stop saying that - makes a bloke feel old, really."

"Get used to it, you are!" Brendan smirked, then ruffled Patrick's hair as if he was a child. "But they say y' get wiser as y' get older, so maybe one day you can tell me what it's like, being this wise old bastard, hey?"

"Maybe one day?" He laughed and shook his head. "That really hurts, Brendan. Because I honestly thought that's what I was all along."
