Tennant Overacting Terror Alert was on medium this week: there were some bits, like his Ghostbusters homage, which were painful to watch Oh my giddy Aunts yes. Yes. I'd disagree with medium though as he seemed to be on danger/flood warning/air raid siren/impending nuclear alert code red overacting for me. That whole 'cup of tea' exchange where he scrambles desperately for comic timing made my teeth itch. That man is truly a disgrace to acting ( ... )

I've never considered writing for Off The Telly, actually. I'll have a look around the site and see if I fancy it. I feel a bit overloaded with writing at the moment, but most of it's my own personal choice; the only thing that needs to be done is Clarrie's article. I'm actually considering stockpiling journal entries in case I need to meet any deadlines. I quite like the carnage of it, all told...

This episode was a bit fanboyish. Then again, I am a fan, also a boy. You do need to get hold of some old series DVDs, though. You want slowly building menace? Pyramids of Mars is all about the slowly building menace!

That should of course have been http://www.offthetelly.co.uk

Some of the most famous names in geekery contribute - Graham Kibble White, Jim Sangster, T.J. Worthington etc. In fact I'm looking at Jim's 'TV Heaven' book right now. A very respected site, and I think you'd fit in well. They're always looking for great writers, so if you get a chance might be a good move.

And dad said that Army Of Ghosts was crap :-(
My reasoning for him saying this was possibly
A) England had just been knocked out of the world cup and he was suffering post traumatic stress
B) He was confused by all the sciency stuff being spouted throughtout the episode and just threw his toys out the pram
or C) EEP! The episode might have been crap to an outsider looking in (Not a Whovian)

I am going with A) coz it wasn't crap it was brilliant but! my heart still adores Impossible Planet/Satan Pit
I am looking forward to what happens in some ways next week I just hope Rose's departure is honourable, we get some 'ship' stuff and leaves a sort of cliffhanger that makes us want to tune in to Season 3

Russell's been saying a lot of things about how this series ends, much of which seems to be mildly contradictory. The scamp!

I didn't think the science was that heavy, though in most who episodes the science is basically on the level of "magic beans", so I only absorb the amount I need to understand basically where it's going.

As usual with new Who it's scientifically very ill-informed (the watt is a unit of energy now?): this always grates because I know perfectly well that an equivalent level of ignorance in the humanities would never get through. This indicates an underlying arrogance and lack of curiosity which runs precisely contrary to the show's own avowed values.

However. I enjoyed AoG tremendously. I always think RTD's over-the-top approach could work, but that it needs to keep momentum. Normally he jerks the viewer out of the flow with something mind-bogglingly ill-judged, lately ably assisted by BloodyTennant. But it hasn't happened so far, fingers crossed for next week.

I don't really see the contradiction of measuring "ghost energy" in watts, as they're talking about using it as a power source, and you do measure the energy output of a power station in watts.

Saying the output of the "ghost energy" in joules would be technically more accurate, but have less meaning as you had no time period specified.

So he chose to hurt her instead. Git. Well he didn't so much try to hurt Jackie as find a way to produce the expected companion and investigate Torchwood while leaving Rose free to rescue them. It may have put Jackie in harm's way, but it was a calculated gamble. It wasn't malicious. (People often seem to read the Ninth Doctor's actions as selfish, which as far as I can see they seldom if ever are.) One of the things I liked about the scene was just how quickly the Doctor got the measure of Torchwood and saw through the smiling facade ( ... )

Plus, as Jackie's said, she'd happily do anything to protect her daughter!

I'm pretty sure he pulled out Jackie by mistake: he reached in without looking, expecting to find Rose to be nearest the door, but instead he got Jackie.
You can tell there's a very short look of surprise/dismay on his face when he sees who he's got.
And of course, when he had pulled one out, he didn't want to betray to them he actually had two people in there, so he had to run with it.

Hmm. Yes, I could see that reading of the scene, but I'd have to watch it again. My feeling was that he reached in the door to deliberately hide Rose, but it could have been to deliberately hide Jackie.

I don't think the Doctor was putting Jackie in that much danger, we know from the last series finale it's perfectly capable of extending it's invulnerability outwards beyond it's own walls, and since when has anyone capturing the doctor been able to resist letting him talk his face off before.

Plus Daleks wooo!

It's been a while since I watched 'The Parting of the Ways', but wasn't that something they specifically programmed? I didn't think it was a normal function of the TARDIS.

Hey, they can rip off Tomb of the Cybermen all they want as far as I'm concerned! It's not a Cyberman story if they don't rip some polythene somewhere along the line.

Right, as predicted, I love Torchwood Yvonne. She's a British Ann Coulter in the body of Madonna, making for deeply impressive camp villainy.

Or a female Van Stattan =P

Yes, the Doctor has always had a bit of a joshing dislike for Jackie, I understand that, but there's a time and a place for sticking your tongue out at her and that time is not when you're surrounded by heavily-armed people who are going to kill you.

I think he gathered from the clapping that they weren't about to kill him.

Doesn't look like that Freema Aygeman's going to be the new companion, does it?

I hope not. I'm glad she died. She bugged me.

Mmm. Fair point, actually.

I predict that Torchwood Yvonne will be the in thing this year for drag queens. She's faaaaabulous!

So very true. Especially with the hair, the cleavage and the red lips. Gorgeous, darling.
