American hero
Part 2

“We’ve got a future little soldier in the family,” Mr. Granger’s father told his son as they both watched four-year-old Colby play in the garden of their house. “Look at him - he’s in the garden, looking for ants. He’s going to be a great tracker. Or he could have potential to drive a tank, if he decides to crush some of those insects…”

“He’s never going to kill anyone, just like he’s never going to hurt any animal,” Mr. Granger said, trying to keep his voice calm. “We’ve talked about it; Colby’s not interested in war.”

“Well, that’s nothing we can’t change.”

That was it. “Stop it, Dad. My son’s not going to join the army, I’ve told you that hundreds of times. Why do you keep trying to make me change my mind?”

“Because our family is good at serving this country. Five generations have done it, why wouldn’t Colby?”

“Because I won’t let him turn into someone who’s not around, who misses every birthday, who will someday become a stranger to his own children!”

“Someone like you?” his father asked. “Someone like me? Are you saying that I didn’t fulfill my duties as a father?” He was definitely angry.

“Dad…”

“I was protecting America, damn it!”

“That’s not the point!”

Mr. Granger and his father stopped talking when Colby came towards them. The kid watched two ants walk over his own hand. “They were eating the flowers,” he said, looking worried. “But we’re not going to kill them, are we? Don’t they deserve to live anyway?”

His father knelt, smiling. “Yeah, Colby. Even ants deserve to live.”

Colby’s grandfather shook his head and got into the house. Mr. Granger took a breath, knowing that he’d have no influence on the little, kind human being he had raised.
