American hero
Part 3

“Daddy?”

Mr. Granger immediately opened his eyes. When he looked around, he realized that he was on his five-year-old son’s bed, right beside him. He looked at his clock; he had fallen asleep while reading a bedtime story.

“I’m awake, I’m awake,” he said, rubbing his eyes and yawning.

“What happened to the duck after he left the house?”

“The duck?” Suddenly, Mr. Granger remembered that the Duck was the main character of the story. “Oh, yeah, he was trying to cross the street and…”

He had just grabbed the book again when he noticed Colby was reaching for something he shouldn’t. Mr. Granger threw the book away and went to stop him. “No, Colby, don’t touch that!

“But you have this with you all the time…”

“That’s something totally different. Don’t you ever touch a gun, do you understand me?” He’d never let Colby do that, no matter how much he’d have to fight with his own father, who was a successful and tough military man and wanted everyone in the family to be involved in the army in one way or another.

Little Colby seemed to be about to cry; thinking that he had been too hard on his son, Mr. Granger said, “Come here, boy,” and hugged him tightly. With that, Colby should calm down, but just in case, the man caressed his soft hair and whispered, “It’s ok, it’s ok… Don’t worry, Colby.”

His son’s broken voice and his question didn’t take him by surprise.

“Would you be here on my birthday?” Colby asked.

“Yeah, son. I’ll be here,” Mr. Granger muttered, even if he knew he was lying - he had to go back to his duties the next day, and Colby’s birthday was a week after that. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
