Kaylee had spent some frantic minutes rushing about her room trying to make everything presentable. Even her worktable had been give the once over. Her recently acquired books were piled up on a nightstand with her journal. The sitting area was ready for them to eat at, though unless she ordered something soon the only thing for eating was going to be the strawberry cake with chocolate frosting she had made. She was even being fussy over the cake, hoping Drizzt would like it. It excited her that the frosting was real, actual and good chocolate instead of her attempted facsimile in protein pack goop ( ... )

Many times throughout his life, too numerous to count, it was Drizzt's heightened sense of hearing that saved his life. Deep within the wilds of the Underdark, where a twist in the lightless tunnels could deliver one into the lap of a horror beyond imagining, and upon the face of the world, where the sun's bright light dazzled his eyes and cover in which to hide was plentiful, he heard his attackers before he saw them. It was useful then, as an instrument of survival, and he was learning that it was useful now in saving himself from embarrassment ( ... )

"You are beautiful."She closed the door behind him in a daze, really blushing now. There was no way he couldn't see it now. Beautiful. She was in a simple dress, had brushed her hair and had cleaned all bits of grease and grime off. Nothing spectacular really, and he thought she was beautiful. A tiny part of her brain was curious to know what he would say if ... when he saw her in a dress either picked out or made by Inara ( ... )

The great cat might have been expecting the call, so quickly did the mist begin to form. Drizzt stepped back to allow Guenhwyvar room, feeling once more the disparity between himself and the rest of his people. Masoj had been jealous of GUenhwyvar's affection for Drizzt, unable to tolerate his possession having loyalties to any but himself. Drizzt felt only happiness, pleased that his oldest and dearest companion had found a friend. A friend that he liked very much.

Guenhwyvar appeared then, glancing back at Drizzt for only a moment before moving forward and butting her head against Kaylee's leg. As the rumbling purr began, Drizzt grinned at Kaylee.

"She has missed you."

[ooc; I'll be online tonight, so I'll be able to write up the response for Inara and Kaylee's log, too.]

Kaylee's eyes got wide as the mist formed. When Guenhwyvar appeared she let out a little gasp, not quite believing that the summon had actually worked. Of course when she got nudged by Guen and heard the purring she believed it ( ... )

Drizzt smiled as he watched the reunion between Kaylee and Guenhwyvar. The smile smoothed out in concern as he heard what Kaylee said to the panther about sleeping alone. Was she lonely? And why had he not thought of such a possibility before? There was little he could do to make up for the days that had passed, but perhaps he could alleviate future distress.

Kaylee's surprise at her success in summoning the cat brought another consideration to the dark elf's mind. Her world was filled with marvels unlike anything he had ever seen, but was it possible that there was no magic in her world? For one of the few times in his life, Drizzt found himself wishing that he had spent more time studying the art of spell casting. He had been good at it, in the six months that he had spent learning it at the Academy, but he had always preferred to put his trust in his strength and agility to see him out of trouble. But now, if only he remembered more of the spells he had learned, if only he possessed the components necessary to cast those spells, ( ... )

Kaylee's smile faltered when he said he heard what she told Guen. Damn! She felt embarrassed, even more so when he said she could request Guen's company whenever she wanted. He really didn't have to do that.

And what was with the silk pouch? She handed over the figurine to him, not wanting to drop it. It was far to precious ... to both of them.

With shaking fingers she opened the pouch and pulled out a unicorn pendant necklace. One that suspiciously looked like the one he wore. A glance up showed her he wasn't wearing it now. THIS was that pendant.

And he was giving it to her?! One of the last bigs of his world and ...

She was completely stunned both by his words and the gift.

"Y-you ... but ... this ..." One shaky hand held the pendant up for her to look at it closer. "I-it's beautiful but ..." She looked him in the eyes.

"Why?"

Knowing that he would have to explain why he was giving her the pendant did not make actually doing it any easier. It was not that he did not wish to answer Kaylee’s question, but rather that it was incredibly difficult without first explaining the circumstances of his existence; not only his life until Paradisa, his memory of which he was beginning to realize was fraught with holes, but the drow themselves. And neither his past nor his people made for a pleasant discussion. He would have to use another explanation.

“Kaylee, I… You…” Drizzt cut himself off, unable to find the proper words. If there even were proper words to convey what it was he wanted to say. Eventually he gave up any pretense of eloquence and just started talking ( ... )

Kaylee looked at the pendant again, needing the distraction to be able to compose herself after hearing those words. She, the simple food-happy ship mechanic without a ship to fix, meant that much to him that the pendant really was going to be hers now? She didn't know what to do. Cry? Faint? Cry then faint? (That would be interesting.) Just stare at him like a total fool until he said something ( ... )

She liked it! The breath Drizzt hadn't been aware of holding finally escaped in a quiet sigh of relief. The anxiety that had been so uncharacteristically churning in his stomach for the last few minutes dissipated with it.

Her hug surprised him, but not so much that it prevented him from holding her as tightly as she held him. “It is,” he replied quietly. “More than I had ever dared dream possible.”

He returned her smile with one of his own. “Bel'la dos. Though I daresay my people do not understand the meaning of the words.”

Much like the ones before it had, the kiss left him breathless. Yet not nearly as flustered as the previous ones had. He was pleased to note that this time he not stare at her like a dumbfounded fool. Instead, he moved forward when she tugged him toward the food. He was, however, oblivious to the fact that Guenhwyvar had butted her head against the back of his legs to get him started.

“Let us eat,” he agreed. “And I will tell you everything you wish to know about Guenhwyvar’s figurine.”
