Apparently when I registered and insured my car in January, the insurance company fucked up my VIN number, so not only have I been driving around with no insurance really, because without a valid VIN number, they consider that the car doesn't actually exist, so there isn't anything to insure, but I also have no registration, for the same reason.

Ask to speak to someone besides the counter person in the MVD when you go in. See if you can't get them to waive that fee, seeing as you've already paid it, really. Don't expect to get the answer you want from the drone at the desk, though - do at least try to get a supervisor or something. It's worth a shot, anyway.
