An entire week had gone by and the weather on the island was nowhere near what it normally was. While some people were already getting sick of the cold, Pam was enjoying it. She loved having to bundle up in layer upon layer upon layer of clothes; having a scarf wrapped around her neck; wearing thick sweaters and warm gloves. It was like having a ( Read more... )

He had been a bit surprised when he realized Pam was sitting outside instead of inside, especially considering how cold it was. He figured she just wanted to enjoy the outside weather, and, shrugging the confusion off, headed over to say hello.

When he reached her and Fiona had jumped off his shoulder, he leaned forward to kiss her forehead lightly. "Hey. What're you up to?"

Whatever was wrong seemed to be really bothering her, so he nodded in response, leaning his elbows on his thighs.

"Okay, what's up?" he asked.

She took another deep breath and just started talking. "I'm afraid you're going to find something about me that you just can't stand and I won't be able to fix it or change it... And you'll eventually just give up and leave," she explained in a rush.

He stared at her for a good long moment, honestly stunned silent. There were plenty of things he was expecting to be the cause of what was going on, but that was definitely not one of them.

"Wait, what?" he asked, almost not sure he heard her right. His expression softened immediately as it sunk in. "Oh, Pam. Do you really believe that would happen?"

Pam simply shrugged uneasily. "I don't know. Maybe? I can't help taking you seriously," she said softly. "Even when I know you're teasing. Because I'm afraid that if I don't.. well.. you know.."

He frowned, shifting closer to her. Taking her hand, he gently tugged her up so she was eye-level with him.

"Pam, listen to me. Don't take this the wrong way, but what you're saying is absolutely ridiculous," he explained, his voice soft. "I would never try to change you, and god, I definitely don't want you to start molding yourself into something just because you think I want you to be like that."

"See? I told you it was stupid," she reminded, looking away from him. "It's either I think that or.. I just get all upset for no reason, so.. I just..." She trailed off with a sigh.

He reached his hand up, gently nudging her face back so she was looking at him again.

"I can't stop you from thinking that, but you're worrying for no reason," he assured.

He paused, rubbing the back of his neck thoughtfully. "I really don't want you to be different. I don't expect you to act a certain way, and even if you do do something to annoy me - like I'm sure I'll annoy you one day - it won't make me love you any less. God, Pam, I'm the luckiest person in the world to have you as my wife. I don't need to imagine some perfect version of you, you're that already."

She gave him a nervous smile, then moved until she was situated between his legs with her back pressed to his chest.

"I'm sorry for being stupid," she said, leaning her head back against his shoulder.

He wrapped his arms around her protectively, leaning his chin on her shoulder.

"Are you feeling any better?" he asked softly.

"A little," she replied, turning her head to the side and pressing a kiss to his cheek. She laid her arms on top of his, her fingers gently stroking the backs of his hands.

"I love you."

"I don't want to fight anymore," he added, sighing. "I really, really don't. And if teasing you makes you feel like that, I'll stop. I honestly will."

"I don't want to fight anymore either," she replied, moving away from him a little. "But, I don't want you to stop.. being you. I'm the one with the problem, not you."

"Then you're going to have to trust me, okay?" he asked, giving her a look. "And I don't mean you saying you trust me and secretly still worry about it. I'm not going to leave you. I'm not going to get sick of you or...whatever you think I'm going to do. It's not going to happen."

Pam nodded. "Okay. I do trust you, Jim."

She curled up on her side, laying down on the bed. "I'm sorry for thinking stupid things like that.."

Jim settled down in bed next to her, reaching out to clutch her hand.

"It isn't stupid if it was bothering you," he replied, pulling her hand closer so he could kiss the back of it. "You really need to talk to me about this stuff, Pam. I was beginning to think you were picking fights with me for no reason and it hurt."
