This is one of the most frustrating things about the GN for me. We just don't know what happened with them during most of that time. I think it was mostly sex.
Of course, on that note, it also leaves a lot of excellent room for speculation... They obviously care about each other during the events of 85 (Dan insisting he and Laurie go bust Rorschach out of prison, the handshake etc), but they also seem distant (Dan saying something along the lines of 'He wants to be friends but isn't sure how' etc
( ... )
I agree with fine_like_this that they did grow closer all throughout those partnership years pre and post Roche case. Rorschach may not really show he cares but he trusts Daniel enough to be his partner for that long. Of course Daniel could not be more blatant than giving that grappling gun (XD).
After the Keene Act was passed I think at some point Daniel would still try to check on Rorschach's 'vigilante' actions even if he's forcing himself to distance himself to the superhero days he had. After all, he wanted to try to live a new life even if he cannot forget the shadow of those days. As for Rorschach... perhaps at some point during his patrol in the night he would drop by Daniel's street or neighborhood and just stand there and watch over or ponder about 'what ifs' albeit in minor quantities.
I kind of think they were buddies/partners between '66-75, as much as you could be buddies with Ror. I liked JEH's theory that Ror appreciates Dan more than he appreciates Ror; Dan probably feels really distant from Ror because Ror doesn't tell him anything about himself, but on the split side, Ror's never felt so close to anyone before and considers Dan to be the closest thing to a companion. Yet Ror retains a professional sensibility of never revealing his name or any other personal information. I'd like to think that Dan at some point realizes that he's the only thing that Ror really has as a friend, but you can only speculate about that. (For instance, I think Dan always thinks he's on tenterhooks, like if he says the wrong thing with Ror that he might get angry and leave (like he can't joke or tease Ror at all, something that would be fairly normal in a friendship for Dan), while Ror is totally chill and thinks there's nothing wrong with their partnership whatsoever. That kind of thing going

I think he kind of used it against the psychologist, though. Sort of like "You want the full story? Heh, YOU ASKED FOR IT." I think he predicted at least somewhat how the psychologist would react. He wanted him to realize it's a fucked up world, no matter what fancy college degrees you may have on your belt.
And in that sense, maybe he wanted to protect Dan from that knowledge. It's pretty disturbing shit.
I think they were very close, I mean they worked together for 10 years before the whole Roche thing happened and 10 years is enough to form a trusting relationship.
I think the problems happened after the whole Roche thing because Dan mentions Rorschach not working with him as frequently and Rorschach becoming awkward, cold and distant put a strain in their relationship. Then the Keene act and Daniel retiring pretty much killed them.
But I have a hard time believing Rorschach and Daniel didn't speak to each other from 77 to 85 that's like 8 years! And if that was the case I at least would like to think Rorschach kept an eye on him as Walter and patrolled around his block as Rorschach several times.
I can tell you one thing though, by 1972 they were already close, after playing The End is Nigh Rorschach's closing monologue says the following.
"The world is once again safe for Democracy, but for how long? How long until day dawns on good men like Nite Owl and I will not be there to do what's right, to turn tide"So yeah the fact that
