The US Election, Religion, and Patriotism-Rant Alert

Yesterday, I attended my uncle's funeral.  Afterward, the members of his church provided a meal for the family in the fellowship hall. The husband of a cousin  proceeded to begin talking about the election, the end of days, and about how God will work things the way He wants them. Good rant.

I seem to remember something about the separation of church and state - so I'm not sure how religion should still be allowed to play in all of this.

I'm waiting for the candidates to come out and say "So-and-so shook hands with Satan! Here's the proof. They're from the ninth circle of Hell! Don't let America go to Hell, America."

And yet I heard a minister just a few weeks back say that separation of church and state is to protect the church from the state and not vice versa. What a load of crap!

The thing is this. We can keep church and state separate, but our values are based in part on our spiritual beliefs. That's all well and good until we believe that our faith mandates that we force our beliefs on others through our political system.

Man, I miss Bill Hicks. We need his truth now more than ever.
