General French antipathy towards Turkey becoming a member of the EU is usually based on Turkey's resistance to acknowledge these kind of rights.

In Turkey it's forbidden to wear a veil in government buildings and universities.

I always found that embarrassing as a Turkish citizen but France doing this after lecturing about human rights for so long..is just ridiculous.

Yeah people are very strict here when it comes to "secularism"

I think they have no idea what that actually means.

Why don't we let Muslim women decide what oppresses them?

I remember reading this story not so long ago about a young girl (round 14 or so I think) who didn't want to violate her religious laws but also wanted to go to school, so she shaved her head. I thought it was sad that she had to do that but cool that she was willing to go to that length to obey her religious edicts

Oh you, thinking that WOMEN can decide anything. Obviously, we need men to tell us any number of things or women's rights would be MUCH farther along than they are.

So, Sarkozy wants to give them dignity and end their segregation ... by confining them completely to their homes?

A girl in my English class wrote an argument about the ban in France. And i almost cried. A lot of women are now refusing to leave their home cause of this. It's just ignorance and for someone at such a high position to hold that level of ignorance is just scary.
