I have gone over the French Constitution twice, and the only remark I see regarding religion is that:
France shall be an indivisible, secular, democratic and social Republic. It shall ensure the equality of all citizens before the law, without distinction of origin, race or religion. It shall respect all beliefs. It shall be organised on a decentralised basis.
Even if it were to uphold that no religious symbols are allowed in public, how is that respecting all beliefs?
Well, it's a well known fact that if a European man sees a woman in a burqa (or indeed any sort of Muslim garb) he will instantly be overcome and turn Muslim and then probably go bomb an orphanage or something.
...Seriously, I have no idea. I don't understand how anyone can look at this idea and NOT go "oh my god this is horribly bigotted, and oppressive, and exactly the opposite of equality before the law and respect of all beliefs".
Maybe I just need Sarkozy to mansplain it for me a bit more.
