THE Marines are looking for a few good women.Actually, they will take as many as they can get. Faced with the difficulty of recruiting during a long and unpopular war, the United States Marine Corps has started marketing itself to women in a concerted way for ( Read more... )

What if you saw advertising targeted towards you every day at least once an hour for several years? Cause that's how they get ya.

Not really... I have heard/read stories of recruiters promising recruits that they could choose where they are stationed as a way to imply they will never be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Obviously you know better. But, are you aware that if you go to Korea you could technically spend at least 8 years without ever entering the middle east. I AM SECRETLY A RECRUITER.

IAWTC. Seriously, if they want women to recruit, how about protecting them once they're in? Fuckers. -_-

I'm an asshole? I'm pretty sure I posted the story of Lavena Johnson here a few days ago. I'm aware of the way the military views women. This is just one of money stories I've posted about that here.

She was actually a sailor in the Naval Special Warfare Center training to be a SEAL. That movie was hot as fuck though. Demi Moore is so fucking hot. Especially in the water. I loved her in Charlie's Angels and shit.

I barely remember it, just googled for her head. But now I look, I see that my favorite, Viggo Mortensen was in it. How did I forget that?

You probably forgot it intentionally because he raped her near the end of the movie. I will never forgive Viggo for that.

I don't really like Code Pink. I seem to recall one of their leaders saying something about how women need to bring our qualities of ~peace~ and ~love~ and ~nurturing nature~ to men. I said OH HALE NO YOU DIDN'T. That quote may be older because I haven't been able to find it, but still. I like my pacifism without gender stereotypes, thanks.

They scare me. They came over to our Students for Barack Obama/Cal Dems booth a few months back when they were "scaring the marines out of Berkeley" or something. They did want to be inclusive and ally with us or something though.

I'm okay with using legit methods to keep recruiters out (i.e. I think there was an Ivy college that used their non-discrimination policy to say that the military recruiters could not be allowed) but I don't know how Code Pink was "scaring them out" exactly.

Have you seen the story Rob Riggle did about Code Pink? I thought it was hilarious.

Dana Bilicki has a good point. Why would any woman who knows the stats about rape in the military join up? They can make all the pretty posters they want... ooh join the military, you'll be so strong and the menz will respect your grrl power!!! -- unless you get raped and murdered, then who fucking cares. Until they start investigating cases like Lavena Johnson's seriously, why would any woman with half a brain join the military? Yeah, I totally wanna join up. Maybe they can put me in the same unit as the guys who killed and raped Lavena Johnson. Or the many other women like her, whose deaths were covered up by the military.

I totally agree. Don't join them until the Marines show that they are prepared to actively and progressively and publicly deal with the violence against women issues that they have.

Why would any woman who knows the stats about rape in the military join up?

Because they want the benefits of the GI Bill, or they want the healthcare benefits, or they want to defend their country, or they just want to challenge themselves. Basically any woman who wants to join probably does so for the same reasons as men who want to join.

Yes, women should be informed that they are 3 times more likely to be raped than killed in combat. If they know that and they still choose to join that is their choice. And, I absolutely respect any woman who makes that choice.

The military really doesn't do much about women being raped. But, women choosing not to join isn't going to change that. The only way that is going to change is if more women join and force the military to examine this problem.

No, the only way this situation is going to change is if *military leadership* actually takes the problem seriously, instead of attempting to cover up and deny these things ever happened. The problem isn't that there are too few women around, the problem is that there are too few high-ranking officers (male OR female) who are interested in catching and punishing military rapists and murderers, as opposed to sweeping the problem under the rug and pretending it doesn't exist. If the military wants women to join up, they need to show that they value women. Pretty posters do not show that they value women. Catching and punishing the men who rape and murder their fellow soldiers would show that they value women.
