I remember back when Chick-fil-A's homophobia was first exposed on a large commercial level, I kind of felt for franchise owners who didn't feel the same way as the brand --felt bad that they'd be associated with bigots. And that's kind of my reaction to this, essentially that "it sucks for them." I won't go to Chik-fil-A for many reasons, but I do feel a bit sad that franchise owners who disagree with the brand are negatively represented.

I know what you mean. But when I feel tempted to give a fuck about those franchise owners, I remember that nobody held a gun to their head and made them become franchise owners. They chose to do so. They could presumably have just as easily bought a franchise for some other company that wasn't so heavily associated with such an obnoxious level of douchefuckery.

And I find myself thinking that if it really bothers them THAT much to be associated with said douchefuckery, maybe they should be looking for somebody to buy them out, instead of trying to convince the rest of us that they're not REALLY douchebags themselves and we should eat at their restaurant even though they represent a company that supports that kind of douchefuckery....

It doesn't really cancel out the horrible projects they also still fund. So the gesture of handing out coupons is really... yeah.

It's nice that the local franchise owner isn't a bigot, but that doesn't speak for anything other than the one local franchise which clearly stands at odds with the overall corporate stance. I'd like Mr. Braun's statement more if he acknowledged that he was only talking about "this Chick-fil-A", because he's clearly all wrong when he generalizes further. Sucks for him that he invested in a company with such crappy values. Sucks more for the people whose rights the corporation's money is lobbying against.

But this peaceful coexistence may be local, and relatively superficial. As a report from the Washington Post notes, the Christian fast food chain has previously come under fire from lesbian, gay and bisexual and transgender rights groups for making large financial donations to anti-gay groups.

Didn't they also donate to the KKK or some other hate group? I'm pretty sure that's why I started boycotting them several years ago.

Not the KKK (as far as I can determine) but one of the groups they ARE known to support, the Family Research Council, is listed as an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

And there are of course all the other delightful organizations they support. This site has a pretty thorough rundown.

Wow. That's... wow.

I'm so glad I've boycotted them for years!
