Naming a winter storm? Meteorologists are appalled by Nemo

Feb 11, 2013 11:47

BOSTON -- Meteorologists might not be sure whether the storm heading into the East Coast will drop 12 inches or 24, but they are sure about one thing - this storm is definitely, absolutely, not called Nemo ( Read more... )

This would be funnier if the fish is actually Nemo, not Marlin. :p

I like naming major winter storms, though I think they need a higher threshold. It makes it easier to keep track of the storm systems and to talk about. And we've had enough Snowpocalypses.

Also, no, weather consultant guy, people are not going to think a winter storm is actually a hurricane because it has a name.

I agree with all of this. Every storm can't be "snowpocalypse", and I like the naming for that reason. And I've heard enough people using the name Nemo, I think the names are going to stick whether people like it or not.

And seriously, who is going to think it's a hurricane just because it has a name?

Ehhhh, tbh as a weather nerd this doesn't even bother me since I don't use the weather channel all that often and I prefer Intellicast for my meteorology info. AccuWeather can be kinda annoying to be honest I hate their radar and if Intellicast is down I use Wunderground. It might be a marketing ploy, but honestly I hate this idea that winter storms (big ones) don't deserve any respect or fear that hurricanes do. Granted I live in Ohio and I have seen my fair share of blizzard and nothing like spending Christmas in Knox Co. with your power gone and no heat for a week and I never really experienced the full horror of a hurricane (though Gustav was a dick and killed power in C-bus in 08) so I might be wrong. But I think finding tools to track and keep an eye on devastating storms like Nor'easters and blizzards is important ( ... )

Nemo is Omen spelled backwards.

It's also Latin for "no one."
