february challenge: anywhere but here
Welcome to omniocular's February challenge!
The world is a big place, and the parts of Britain we see in canon are just a small corner of it. This month's challenge is "Anywhere But Here," expanding the magical world beyond the canon locations with stories and artwork that take place across the globe. For the challenge, we have compiled a list of locations, both local (the Tower of London) and vast (the Himalayas), ancient (Machu Picchu) and modern (The Mall of America), spanning the entire world from Bolivia to Beijing, Texas to Timbuktu.
To participate, simply claim a location (or two, if you dare) from the list below to include in your story or artwork. You don't need to know a place well to claim it, and you certainly don't have to have been there -- that's what the internet is for, after all. There are only two requirements: 1) Your chosen location(s) must play a significant role in your story or artwork; and 2) The majority of the story must take place somewhere other than the canon locations in Britain.
Please note: Each number may be claimed only twice. You can only claim up to two numbers at a time, but you may include as many different locations as you like. (If you want to write a 'round-the-world globe-trotting epic, we certainly aren't going to stop you.)
Gen stories and artwork of any genre, style, length and rating are accepted. You don't have to limit yourself to canon characters and eras, either. Historical fiction, original characters, crossovers, and wizarding "non-fiction" (such as magical postcards, travel guides, and book excerpts) are all welcome. As always, both members and non-members may participate. Members can post their work at any time according to the posting guidelines; non-members can either leave a link in this post or email us at omnio_mods @ yahoo.com.
About the List: The list is organized by region. There is some intentional overlap to cover a range of geographic scales. For example, "The Left Bank, Paris" and "France" are listed separately, so we could, in theory, end up with four stories that take place in Paris. (But who's going to complain about that?)
You may claim one or two numbers. If you do claim two locations, remember that both must play a central role in the story. And please, be sensible about it. Don't try to claim both "Cairo" and "The Egyptian Museum, Cairo" because that's just silly, and we'll make fun of you a little bit before asking you to claim something else. If you are feeling very prolific in February, you are more than welcome to claim another location or two after you submit work for the first.
Remember: Each number may be chosen only twice. If the place you want is already taken, pull out your atlas or dust off your Lonely Planet guidebooks and snag something else!
