Children's Season 2014 at the National Museum - Masak Masak, My Childhood

Our favourite Children's Season is back, just in time for the school holidays!

Last weekend, we checked out Masak Masak, My Childhood at the National Museum of Singapore.

It was lots of fun, and dare I say, probably their best Children's Season installment so far!

Our first stop was Rouleaux, an eclectic collection of miniature dioramas from France. In this special collaboration with the National Museum of Singapore, the dioramas created are inspired by the theme of 'What I want to be when I grow up'.

We had a fun time peeking into the tubes and looking at the intricate cut-out scenes. I actually had no idea they were toilet rolls until much later! I was very impressed!

Kids could try their hand at making their own dioramas here. We didn't want to spend too much time there so we grabbed the printouts and brought them home for the boys.

After that, we let Ryan loose at Play@NMS while Sean joined an Art Therapy workshop by Red Pencil.

It was a drop-off class and from what we could see by peeping into the class, he was supposed to make something to represent himself. He made a robot out of paper plates and strips of paper (his favourite thing to do) and he even got up to the front of the class to present his creation. SO CUTE! I wish we were allowed to go in to watch him!

Then there was Come and Play by Justin Lee where everything (houses, the dragon playground, merry-go-round, etc) in the room is painstakingly made out of cardboard. The boys spent some time here putting together and decorating their own cardboard houses here. (Okay, Ryan actually preferred wearing his house on his head!)

At the Larger-than-Life Games at the Concourse, the boys went a bit crazy playing the games adapted from my childhood days. They were tossing five stones on a springy board, rolling 'marbles' and building structures/swords with the pick-up sticks.

I thought the games were very cleverly thought out even though no one was really following the rules in the mad chaos. I literally had to drag my boys away so we could see the rest of the installations :)

Our favourite station of the day was the Sculpture Scribble by Spanish group Guixot de 8.

The installations, which are made out of old and scrap materials, were extremely fun and interactive. We spent ages here trying to complete every one.

What I really liked was they were not too easy and they all required some agility and brains. Yet even 2yo Ryan could get the hang of them after some practice!

We missed out on the dragon and elephant slides at the front lawn so we must go back again.

Overall, we had a really fun time. It has set a really high standard for Children's Season and I really hope the rest of the museums are as good!

Masak Masak, My Childhood will run at the National Museum of Singapore till 03 Aug 2014, 10am to 6pm daily.

While you are there, you can also check out Play@NMS on Level 3 or register for the Art Therapy workshops by Red Pencil.

Hurray for the Children's Season!
