Flipside, the festival that presents thte lighter side of the arts, is back at the Esplanade from now till 8 June!
We enjoyed the event immensely
last year and were really looking forward to it again.
We got there a bit early today and it was still quite quiet (6pm is the best time to go because that's when most of the programmes start).
We did catch #sgJAM - which was a curious mix of ballet, violin and hip-hop - at the waterfront. Then the boys tried their hand at spinning plates. Definitely not at as easy as it looks!
We LOVED the Bicycle Scribble by the Spanish group Quixot de 8 (yes, they have a similar installation at the
National Museum for Children's Season).
This installation is a tribute to the humble bicycle. Old bicycle parts - from the wheels to the handlebar and even the pedals - are re-engineered into a collection of 30+ cleverly thought out games. We spent a really long time playing here, as did everyone!
Here's one of Sean in action (how ingenious is the bicycle wheel contraption!):

After that, we watched the miming clown troupe Ojarus from Japan. I found the performance bizarre and a bit disconcerting but the kids (who had front row seats) alternated between being terrified and highly tickled by it.
Finally, we watched Pants Down Circus: ROCK! at the outdoor theatre. It was fifty entertaining minutes of daredevil acrobatics, slapstick comedy and craziness all rolled into one. The four 'rock stars' were really good!
It was a fun-filled evening. Well worth staying out past the children's bedtimes. We will be back again to check out the other acts next weekend ;)
Flipside will be at the Esplanade until 8 June. There are different programmes everyday even on weekdays- do check out the
calendar. Don't miss it!
