Play@NMS

This weekend, the National Museum of Singapore is kickstarting the school holidays with the opening of PLAY@NMS, the first dedicated play area for young children to take their first steps towards museum-going.

PLAY@NMS features both indoor and outdoor play areas with interactive exhibits and special activities for children on the third floor of the museum.

In the Living Room, children can put up a puppet performance for family and friends. They can also watch short videos clips from the 80's (such as Aksi Mat Yo Yo) or listen to songs or stories on the radio.

Over at the Bedroom, children can play 'dress up' in front of the mirror with decals of the local costumes such as the cheongsam, baju melayu or sari.

The biggest draw has to be the big cloth tent where children can crawl inside and sprawl on the rug to watch short animations on the big screen. Sean loved this :)

Then there is the Garden which was inspired by William Farquhar's collection of flora and fauna drawings. Here, Children can engage in tactile play to explore different shapes and textures of local flowers, leaves and fruits and fit them onto a tree.

Don't miss the extension of the Garden at the sundeck, where children can run around outdoors or sketch their own interpretation of the displayed flora and fauna drawings using coloured chalk.

Another really fun area is the Kitchen where children can play masak-masak and cook up local dishes such as hokkien mee, roti prata or nasi lemak following the illustrated ingredient boards or recipe books. I imagine this section will be really popular with little ones!

You can also choose to explore the art-making technique of embossing your favourite dish and colour them at the Create room.

PLAY@NMS is open 10am to 6pm daily. It is for children aged 3 to 7 (though personally I think children as young as 1 or 2 will be able to appreciate the exhibits too). Admission is free. You can check out the schedule for the supplementary activities held on weekends.

And of course, our all-time favourite Children's Season 2014 is also starting today. You can expect a plethora of activities for little ones at all the museums island-wide from now till end of June.

Hope to see you there!
