Posting schedules

*plonks down with some spiced chai and crumb cake* Morning, all! I've been pondering something of late, and was wondering if you writers of multi-chaptered works could enlighten a oneshot maven: what dictates chapter postings, the story or the schedule?

I'm especially thinking of you insane dedicated souls who post chapters DAILY, or every other ( Read more... )

When I have a WiP, I usually follow an outline for my chapters. I don't post until the chapter's done, regardless of how long it takes. Usually, if I know it's going to be a while before the next release, I put an author's note on the story just to let everyone know that I've not forgotten them.

In my experience, it was based on the story.

I figure 1000ish words was like the third bowl of porrige: not too short, not too long.

But, I also never asked anyone.

As for the near-daily posting schedule... I'm a comment whore, so I needed the love and wanted the daily satisfaction of entertaining There wasn't much fic being posted, and it was hard enough to only post once a day.

Also, the rules at tinman_fic clearly state no spamming. Of course, as I was one of the few posting, it was really still spamming :)

I also had about 50 'chapters' ready to go.

Sadly, I have since caught up to myself and haven't had the time to sit and type/write, so the ideas just swirl and people wait. Really, I just wanted to see if others would write something for a change - worked for a bit ;)

The other problem is that there are times when the Papaybunny only goes so far and you find yourself needing to connect A and D ( ... )

I've always wanted to ACTUALLY finish a multi-chapter story, so I tried writing out the whole thing before posting any. It worked, I finished it, and in the beginning, at least, I was pretty good at posting every day.

... And then I missed a few days.

... And then my computer went on vacation.

I'm really bad at punctuality. -.- In the future, I will stick to writing bad one shots.

Well, I had "The Consort" finished before I started posting, so it was purely a matter of deciding how to break it up. I love posting like this; there's never any worries about not getting thigns done in time or subjecting your readers to a long wait.

Of course, then I decided to change the whole ending and add on to it, so now I'm about to catch up with myself again and will have to write fast if I want to keep my now every-other-day schedule.

Here's my two cents...In the beginning it was 5-7 days which not only seemed to be the average of the other multi-chapter stories, but that was how long it took me to write and edit a 1500-2500 word chapter and then have something of a start on the next. Towards the end I think I was posting every 2-4 days just so that I could finish it up. I'm a bad egger in not working on my sequel but I believe that the ones who had followed along from before will continue to do so.
