What I don't fully understand is how the same company that canceled the Fantastic Beasts series, is now making a tv series, from the same property. Is it just because FB was a prequel and a mess, but this is from the original books which are less of a mess?

It's an expensive license that they're desperate to get a return on, and not to let it fall so far back in time that people stop being bothered about all the parks/merch etc. FB was diminishing returns and tarnishing the brand, so they've fallen back on the OGs.

This is how I see it.

If the first season happened to magically flop I'm sure they'd pivot back to an original idea to milk HP like finally a Marauders series or doing an adaptation of Cursed Child
