i saw blitz this past weekend and it was one of my anticipated of the year, so i am about to write way too much about it lmao. my grandparents were kids growing up in scotland during the blitz. my grandma was the same age as the boy in the movie when she and her parents went into a bunker to wait out a bombing raid over glasgow, then came out the next morning to find their house was gone. i left this one pretty emotional because i couldn’t NOT connect to it on that level. on a more objective level… the writing was sooo scattershot. i listened to steve mcqueen talk about the movie on edith bowman’s podcast yesterday and he talked about only really seeing the script as the bare bones start that gets the ball rolling on production, and i was like okay, that checks out with what happened here lol. i think having a co-writer to fine tune it all would have helped, especially since mcqueen usually works with one. the scale and the production value were impressive, though. the cast was great, predictably (and the boy playing george did a ( ... )

IA about the script of Blitz; at times I found it really on-the-nose, which I'm so not used to with him. Loved the cast, though!

I thought EP was generally getting strong reviews across the board, so I was pretty taken aback when I checked Letterboxd yesterday and the ratings were alllllll over the place. And now I know why! I def wanna talk to more people about it because 🤔🤔🤔

yeah, it’s so unlike mcqueen! realizing this is the first time he’s written the script solo (as far as i know - i checked other stuff of his i’ve seen and all had co-writers) made it make more sense. i really think a co-writer could’ve snapped it all into place while he focused fully on production/directing.

and yeah, EP seemed to have so much fanfare for a long time and now it’s half beloved, half early awards season villain. it’s only made me more curious. will totally be sharing my thoughts in the post next week!

I finally watched Monkey Man yesterday and had a blast!

I want to watch Venom 3, Heretic, Conclave, The Substance, Nosferatu, Hot Frosty, and now I’m curious about Emilia Perez

I watched Emilia Perez in theater and...I wish I liked it more because I was very excited. Objectively, I thought the musical elements were interesting because I wouldn't consider the movie a musical but the music does elevate the characters' internal monologues and emotions so it did work. But the story/script felt very thin to me. Zoe was the standout for me. I think it was an okay movie with great performances (minus Selena, she needs to retire).

I knew Emilia Perez was going to be polarizing, but truly didn't expect for it to be so uniquely weird. Like, it’s kind of all wrong, from the casting choices (Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz aside) to the musical numbers…but it works somehow. It was kind of refreshing to see something so out there and beyond even traditional arthouse stuff. I do kind of find it funny how much social media isn’t ’getting it’ though, and like the concept of stylization and refined camp when it comes to cinema going right past their head. Also, lots of people coming for Selena, and yes her accent (Zoe’s too, to be honest) was off even with her character being a non native speaker, but I thought she gave a very raw performance and it’s the first time I saw true range from her.
