i saw blitz this past weekend and it was one of my anticipated of the year, so i am about to write way too much about it lmao. my grandparents were kids growing up in scotland during the blitz. my grandma was the same age as the boy in the movie when she and her parents went into a bunker to wait out a bombing raid over glasgow, then came out the next morning to find their house was gone. i left this one pretty emotional because i couldn’t NOT connect to it on that level. on a more objective level… the writing was sooo scattershot. i listened to steve mcqueen talk about the movie on edith bowman’s podcast yesterday and he talked about only really seeing the script as the bare bones start that gets the ball rolling on production, and i was like okay, that checks out with what happened here lol. i think having a co-writer to fine tune it all would have helped, especially since mcqueen usually works with one. the scale and the production value were impressive, though. the cast was great, predictably (and the boy playing george did a wonderful job with a heavy role). minor spoiler: [Spoiler (click to open)]i would watch a whole movie of harris dickinson’s character quietly pining for saoirse’s character from afar lmao but also, because i wanted a whole movie about that, i kept being like “no harris, don’t leave!” anyways, it’s hard for me to know how to even rate this one. glad i got to see it in a theatre though.

dying to finally watch emilia pérez, especially with how polarizing it’s become. i can’t even guess if i’ll love or hate it. this week’s been chaos but i’m hoping to watch it by tomorrow night at the latest.

IA about the script of Blitz; at times I found it really on-the-nose, which I'm so not used to with him. Loved the cast, though!

I thought EP was generally getting strong reviews across the board, so I was pretty taken aback when I checked Letterboxd yesterday and the ratings were alllllll over the place. And now I know why! I def wanna talk to more people about it because 🤔🤔🤔

yeah, it’s so unlike mcqueen! realizing this is the first time he’s written the script solo (as far as i know - i checked other stuff of his i’ve seen and all had co-writers) made it make more sense. i really think a co-writer could’ve snapped it all into place while he focused fully on production/directing.

and yeah, EP seemed to have so much fanfare for a long time and now it’s half beloved, half early awards season villain. it’s only made me more curious. will totally be sharing my thoughts in the post next week!
