I went to the Vatican a few years ago but was in a time crunch so I only had about 2 hours. Someone told me to latch on to the end of a tour group to get to the Sistine Chapel because they exited the building in the place I needed to meet my driver (IIRC). So I did that and we kept going down stairwells and the chapel was so dark I didn't even realize it was THE chapel until I heard the guards telling people not to take pictures. I felt like a real idiot, but it was not what I expected lol

The chapel is much smaller, darker and..cluttered?.. then it appears in photos. I've only been once, in 1992, and was a bit underwhelmed.

yes! It was much smaller and darker than I thought it would be. I legitimately thought we were in a holding room or something waiting to go into the real thing until I heard the guards lol

I was shocked to see it there as well, but it really put into perspective where these masterpieces were built before the Vatican took over in being the main patron of the arts. It was very humbling.

I don't know or care much about catholicism, but I read about how people believe Vatican secretly has that chronovisor thing and I think the concept of that device is fascinating. It would be so cool if it existed.
